Florida Gulf Coast University has contacted UF assistant coach Richard Pitino about its coaching vacancy.
“There is definitely interest Richard, in my conversations with them,” Florida coach Billy Donovan told Florida Today’s David Jones. “They are going through a process and right now 3 of 4 people are being considered.”
Pitino, 28, is the same age as Donovan was when he took his first head coaching job in 1994 at Marshall. FGCU, located in South Fort Myers, made the jump to Division I in 2007 and plays in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Meanwhile, Florida associate coach Larry Shyatt said he has not being contacted by Wyoming in regards to its head coaching position. Asked if he would be interested if contacted by Wyoming, Shyatt answered: “That’s a question I wouldn’t be able to answer unless we visited some.”
Shyatt spent the 1997-98 season as head coach at Wyoming, leading the Cowboys to a 19-9 record and an NIT appearance before leaving to become head coach at Clemson.
“Had a great year there,” Shyatt said. “Loved it.”
Shyatt has worked as an asssitant at Florida since 2004, turning down head coaching offers from Fairfield, Western Kentucky and UNF to stay at UF.
