Some observations following UF’s 75-50 win over Texas Southern:
– The Gators need to put some extra time in at the free-throw line before Sunday’s game against Jacksonville. Florida went 6 of 11 from the foul line against Texas Southern and is 7 of 15 from the line over its last two games. Junior forward Dorian Finney-Smith missed all four of his free-throw attempts against Texas Southern.
– Sophomore forward Chris Walker continued to show signs of progress, but in grabbing just two rebounds against Texas Southern, he was a little lax on the boards. Given the fact that the 6-foot-10 Walker was the tallest player on the court, he should have been able to get at least a half-dozen rebounds by accident. “A game like that, Chris should be able to dominate on the boards,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. Amen.
– With baskets from Chris Chiozza and walk-on Jacob Kurtz late, the Gators had nine different players score against Texas Southern. Florida is settling in to a nice nine-player rotation that will extend to 10 players when junior forward Alex Murphy becomes eligible later this month (either Dec. 20 against Wake Forest or Dec. 30 against Florida State, depending when his grades are posted). That depth should help the Gators when they reach Southeastern Conference play, especially if everyone is contributing.
