Some observations following UF’s 84-83 overtime win over Wisconsin in the Sweet 16.
— Florida coach Mike White admitted that he probably should have fouled Wisconsin up three in regulation rather than let the Badgers get off Zak Showalter’s game-tying 3-point shot that forced overtime. “We’re always open to new things as coaches and that’s something we might re-visit this spring.” White said. But Florida also tried to slow it down too early, up 12 with 5:23 remaining, which allowed the Badgers to come back.
— While Florida was 71.4 percent from the free throw line for the game (20-28), the Gators missed three costly ones in the final seven minutes that gave Wisconsin life and allowed the Badgers to force overtime. Kasey Hill went 3 of 4 from the line and Kevarrius Hayes went 2 of 4. Senior Canyon Barry did hit a pair of big free throws with 38 seconds left in overtime, which allowed UF to start its comeback.
— Florida held its own on the boards, only getting outrebounded 36-34. But the Gators also allowed Wisconsin to grab a few key offensive rebounds down the stretch, including an offensive rebound and putback by center Ethan Happ that cut UF’s lead to 72-69 with 44 seconds left. Florida will need to tighten up on the boards against South Carolina.
