Some observations following Florida’s 57-53 win at Georgia on Tuesday night.
– Credit sophomore point guard Chris Chiozza for not sulking after losing his starting job to Kasey Hill. Chiozza came up with two big plays in 14 minutes off the bench. One was a steal that set up a Dorian Finney-Smith runout in transition during an 8-0 Florida run that allowed the Gators to take 34-33 lead. The second was making two clutch free throws with 32.5 seconds left to put Florida up 54-50 and keep it a two possession game.
– Yes, Hill can drive you batty with his free-throw shooting (1-6 from the line against Georgia). But Hill impacted the game with his quickness in different ways and came up with a pair of big assists on dishes to John Egbunu on wide open dunks in the final five minutes. Hill (7 points, 5 assists) is at his best when he uses his quickness with the ball to set up others instead of worrying about his own offense. Remember, as a freshman, Hill had 10 assists in a Sweet 16 game against UCLA, tying Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd and Keith Gatlin for an NCAA Tournament record.
– Even though Florida struggled offensively, the balance of shot attempts was much better against Georgia than it was against Alabama. Freshman guard KeVaughn Allen had a team-high 13 shot attempts, and though senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith struggled from the floor, he still was more active offensively with 1o shot attempts. Florida coach Mike White said he continues to have to remind Allen to stay aggressive throughout the game. “I tell him that 20 times a day,” White said. “That’s his gift. He can go get baskets, and he’s good defensively too. KeVaughn, he’s very conscientious, sometimes we need to prod him if he’s missed a couple and so-and-so hasn’t gotten a touch in a couple of trips. Sometimes he has too much going on in his mind and we have to prod him to be really aggressive.”
