Way to go Girls!

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

University of Florida rising seniors Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) and Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) competed for the first time in their careers in the sand and narrowly missed out on advancing to the semifinals of the POWERADE Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships sponsored by CSTV on Sunday.

Hampton and McGinnis were the No. 6 seed in the eight-team tournament that featured collegiate stars from across the nation. They went 1-2 in pool play with a victory against No. 3 seed Penn State and losses to No. 2 seed and eventual runner-up Stanford and No. 7 seed San Diego.

“You could definitely tell who had played on the beach before and who hadn’t,” McGinnis said. “But for having not played 2-on-2 on the beach before and having only a few practices, I think Marcie and I did really well. We didn’t realize it would be so intense with a big crowd watching us play. I’m definitely glad we did it because it was so much fun.”

“It was great to see several of my friends who play at different schools,” Hampton said. “Playing on the beach with Angie was fun. It’s a different style of volleyball, but we both had an absolute blast. Having never played on the sand before, it was really hard and a lot of the other players had experience playing on the sand. They knew what they were doing and were really good beach players.”

Hampton and McGinnis opened the event with an upset over third-seeded Penn State (15-12, 15-10) in Pool B play. The Gators then fell to No. 2 seed Stanford (15-10, 15-11) before ending the afternoon with a close 15-12, 15-13 loss to No. 7 seed San Diego. Both of Florida’s defeats came to the two teams that advanced out of Pool B to the semifinals. Stanford went on to fall to No. 1 seed Nebraska in a tight final.

The event will air on CSTV as part of the Collegiate Nationals beginning on May 6 at 5:30 p.m. (ET) with the preview show. Action from the volleyball pool play will be broadcast on May 12 at 9 p.m. (ET). The first semifinal will air on May 18 at 9 p.m. (ET) with the second semifinal on May 19 at 9 p.m. (ET). The final will be broadcast on May 20 at 9 p.m. (ET).

This year’s Collegiate Nationals competition will again bring together athletes from nearly 100 different colleges and universities across the country and will ultimately crown national champions in more than nine categories. For more information, visit www.thecollegiatenationals.com.
