Wesley Sandy Chandler played wide receiver for Doug Dickey's Florida Gators from 1974 to 1977, and was one of the few highlights of the team in that era. After playing running back in a wishbone attack at New Smyrna Beach High School, Wes converted to wide receiver in Dickey's option attack (not much difference, really). Despite being a receiver in a running offense, he caught 92 passes for 1963 yards and a school record 22 TDs, with six more TDs off rushes and kick returns. He was the team's leading receiver from 1975 to 1977, first team All American in 1976 and 1977, Academic All American in 1977, and Fergie Ferguson Award winner in 1977. Wes is generally considered to be one of the best athletes ever to play at Florida. He was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1989. Wes was the third overall pick of the 1978 NFL Draft, going to the New Orleans Saints. His 556 receptions for 8966 yards over the course of his 11 year NFL career are still 12th and 13th in NFL history. He was inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame in 2001.
