Tuesday's Thoughts

Sitting here on this rainy Tuesday in Jacksonville…

Thinking about what’s going to become of Urban Meyer these next few months. Our fearless leader has said that he will be back for spring practice, and that he might take some time off after NSD. I am glad that Urban is feeling so much better so fast, but those things that made him rethink his whole philosophy and almost give up coaching forever are still there. They are just suppressed by an offseason with a lot less pressure than being number 1 in the country for 13 straight weeks and trying to protect an undefeated season.

To me, it’s sort of like that movie Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon, where he’s a good boyfriend to Drew Barrymore during the offseason, but once spring training rolls around he’s this overly Red Sox obsessed school boy. Meyer feels better because it's the offseason and there is A LOT less pressure and there is less to get done during this time. I think Meyer should really take some time off. Maybe play 18 holes with the ole ball coach, or take a vacation with his family to Hawaii or Key West. We all know he’s a parrott head, go see a Jimmy Buffett concert. Because, maybe not this season, but the next, we could be number 1 again. And working on perfection yet again. And those old feelings of trying not to let the entire Gator Nation down, will come back. Stress like you could not believe, I’m sure of it.

I’m glad that Urban has decided to delegate his special teams duties, and now all of his recruiting traveling, to his staff. That surely took the edge off, and let him relax. But, when the Gators lose, Meyer thinks that it is ALL his fault. That he didn’t put the players in a position to win. That is not true at all. It’s just on that particular day, the other team wants it more than we do. As was the case in the Georgia Dome two months ago. It’s not that they were a better team than we were, it’s not that they were prepared more. It’s that their whole season leading up to that game, was focused on the Gators. They weren’t worried as much about trying to go undefeated, but trying to get to Atlanta to get revenge on the Gators. It seemed to me that we were more focused on perfection than we were the games at hand. Focused more on trying not to lose, than trying to win.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I want Urban Meyer to spend the rest of his coaching days with less stress, and less anxiety, than I saw on his face on December 5th. The man was absolutely hurting. And I want Urban to know that, win or lose, Gator Nation is 100% behind him. Football is not more important than your family, your health, and your faith. It’s a game. A very fun and consuming game. But a game nonetheless.

I am very confident that Urban will be on the sidelines during the O&B game and the head coach when the Miami(Ohio) game rolls around. I just hope he’s got a smile on his face the whole season. Why so serious?? Have some FUN Urban.

I’d like to end this blog with a quote from the great Lou Holtz..
“You don’t have to be the best team in the country. Just the best team in the stadium.”

Be Well Gator Nation
