Gainesville, FL The Florida men’s basketball team bounced back in impressive fashion in their first game following its first loss of the season with a 71-48 victory over Stetson Tuesday evening at the O’Connell Center. The victory extends the Gators’ streak against the Hatters to 14 straight meetings.
Sophomore center Marreese Speights (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led the Gator squad with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while sophomore Jonathan Mitchell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added a season-high 10 points to help the Gators seal the victory.
Florida rallied back from a 10-1 deficit early in the first half and controlled the game both offensively and defensively from that point on. The Gators out-rebounded the Hatters 33-29 in the win, led by Dan Werner (Middletown, N.J.), who corralled eight boards.
On offense, Florida shot 54 percent from the floor and was six-for-14 from behind the three point line.
The Gators went on a 12-2 run to rally back from a 10-1 deficit to take the lead for the first time in the game with a 13-12 advantage with 11:56 remaining in the half. From that point on, the Orange and Blue outscored the Hatters 22-9 in the first half.
Werner led the team with nine points and five rebounds, helping the Gators to a 35-21 lead going into the locker room at the half. Werner was a perfect three-for-three from behind the arc.
Stetson was paced by Garfield Blair, who had 16 points and seven rebounds.
