New 3pt line for 2008-2009

At some point near the end of Monday night's championship game, one of the players will launch a 3-pointer that will be noteworthy because it will be the last of its kind.

After 22 seasons and NCAA Tournaments with the 3-point distance at 19 feet, 9 inches, the men's game will step back a foot. Starting with the 2008-09 season, a 3-pointer will need to be at least 20 feet, 9 inches.

Why it happened

The NCAA men's basketball rules committee's research showed that since 1992 the percentage of made 3-pointers has hovered between a low of 34.1 and a high of 35.6.

The number of 3-pointers attempted has steadily risen from an average of 9.2 per game to a high of nearly 19 per game last season.

The rules committee hopes that moving the 3-point distance back will help create more space between perimeter and post players. That could help decrease the congestion and physical play around the basket.

Maybe 3 pointers are too easy to come by these days. And to better prepare players for the next level.
