Florida Hires South Carolina DL Coach Brad Lawing

According to multiple reports, Florida hired South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing into a similar position for the Gators. Lawing had worked at SC for a total of 17 years with a stint under Nick Saban at Michigan State and near his hometown of Hickory, NC at North Carolina. Coach Lawing will be a welcome addition to the Gators coaching staff.

  • 2010 - guided school record of 41 sacks/ year, #12 rushing defense, #46 total defense
  • 2010 - guided Devin Taylor to All-SEC selection
  • 2009 - guided DL to #15 total defense
  • 2008 - guided DL to #13 total defense
  • 2008 - coached Eric Norwood to All-SEC honors
  • 2007 - coached Eric Norwood to All-SEC honors
  • 2006 - coached Eric Norwood to Freshman All SEC honors
• 2004-2005 North Carolina defensive end coach and recruiting coordinator
• 1999-2002 Michigan State defensive end coach and recruiting coordinator
  • 1999 & 2000 - coached #1 defense in Big 10 conference
  • Coached future NFL players Julian Peterson, Robaire Smith, Jace Sayler, and Josh Shaw
• 1989-1998 South Carolina defensive end coach and recruiting coordinator

  • coached All-SEC players Henry Taylor, Eric Sullivan, and Stacy Evans

Note: Coach Lawing just received a pay raise last year to $300K/year. Dan Quinn was receiving $510K/year as DC, DJ Durkin was receiving $340K/year as LB coach and ST coordinator, and Bryant Young was receiving $230K as DL coach. The assumption is that Durkin will get a raise to some salary between $340K and $500K, and Lawing will get paid somewhere at least $340K.

South Carolina reports that they just backfilled Lawing's position by hiring North Carolina DL coach Deke Adams.

This is an awesome hire--and a welcome reassurance to a LOT of folks (in, out, and hopefully soon-to-BE in-the-program) that the Gators are in fine shape coaching-wise, and won't miss a beat on defense from last season to next--especially if/when our upcoming recruiting class turns out as impressive as it is shaping up to be, importantly INCLUDING along the defensive line.
