Brantley hurt

I didn't even know this...

GAINESVILLE - Johnny Brantley was one of the nation's elite quarterback recruits a year ago out of Trinity Catholic in Ocala. He failed to win the backup job behind Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow last fall and redshirted.

But this spring was supposed to be Brantley's chance to compete for playing time. That competition may be placed on hold, after he suffered a shoulder injury during recent offseason conditioning.

Brantley, the 2006 National Gatorade Player of the Year in prep football, was injured during mat drills. The damage, however, was to his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

He is currently unable to work out, and could be sidelined another 3 to 5 weeks.

Not good news.

John Brantley's quest to become Florida's No. 2 quarterback could be on hold for the early part of spring practice.

Brantley, a redshirt freshman from Ocala, dislocated his left, non-throwing shoulder during mat drills earlier this week and his status for the start of spring practice (March 19) is uncertain, said his father, John Brantley Sr.

"Hopefully, he won't miss too much," John Brantley Sr. said. "They just don't know. They say he could miss the entire spring or a week or two or maybe even no time at all. We'll just have to wait and see."

John Brantley Sr. said his son's shoulder popped out of place and then popped back in, creating a bone chip in the socket.

"The good news is it's not his right shoulder," he said. "Hopefully, this is just a little bump in the road."

Brantley is expected to compete with sophomore Cameron Newton for the backup role behind Heisman winner Tim Tebow. UF coach Urban Meyer has said the plan is to play two quarterbacks this season, much like the Gators did in 2006 when Tebow had a package of plays playing in relief of Chris Leak.

Brantley has matured physically since he's been a UF, his father said.

"He's gotten bigger and stronger," John Brantley Sr. said. "He's almost 6-4 now and he's at about 210 pounds. He's really been coming on."

Hopefully ends up OK.

it's good to hear that he is getting bigger and stronger... hopefully the shoulder injury isn't gonna bother him in the long run

I'm glad it wasn't a major injury, and it wasn't his throwing arm. He should be fine in a matter of weeks, and from what his dad was saying he's become stronger - only more good news as far as our depth at QB heading into this season is concerned.
