Bonner named Florida’s “Living Legend”

It didn’t seem long ago that 6-foot-9 Matt Bonner was launching (and hitting) 3-point shots with regularity in a Florida Gator uniform.

But 14 years have passed since Bonner last played for UF in 2003. That was apparent when the SEC named Bonner as Florida’s “Living Legend” for the 2017 SEC Tournament.

A Concord, N.H., native, Bonner played at UF from 1999-2003 and remains 10th on UF’s all-time scoring list with 1,570 career points. He was part of UF’s second Final Four team in school history (2000) and first team that reached a No. 1 ranking in school history (2003). He made 165 3-pointers and was one of the original stretch-fours in college basketball, showing that a power forward who could shoot from 3-point range was an effective weapon to space the floor.

Bonner took his shooting prowess to the NBA, where he played 12 seasons with the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs. A career .414 3-point shooter in the NBA, Bonner earned a pair of NBA title rings with the Spurs. Bonner, 36, recently announced his NBA retirement in a humorous YouTube video.
