Some observations following Florida’s 83-78 loss at Florida State:
— Florida’s lack of a true power forward is proving costly on the glass. FSU outrebounded the Gators 42-33, and if not for a few missed chippies, the Seminoles would have scored more than 10 second-chance points. At some point, Florida coach Mike White may need to consider playing center John Egbunu and center Kevarrius Hayes together against more physical frontlines.
— Senior Kasey Hill was asked to do more offensively with KeVaughn Allen in foul trouble, but it’s never ideal for a starting point guard to have an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3 to 5. Credit Hill, though, for not being afraid to drive inside despite FSU’s size and length around the basket. I felt Hill could have drove in during the closing minutes to try to draw contact and cut into FSU’s 77-74 lead in the closing minutes, but he chose to pull the ball out instead.
— Florida senior Canyon Barry is playing hard, but has hit a rut offensively. Since scoring 20 points in UF’s 81-76 win over Seton Hall, Barry is shooting just 13 of 45 from the floor and 1 of 11 from 3-point range. The Gators need to find a way to get Barry back on track before SEC play begins. FSU outscored Florida 19-18 in bench points.
