Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 73-66 win over St. Bonaventure

Some observations following UF’s 73-66 win over St. Bonaventure in Lakeland on Thursday night:

• John Egbunu is still struggling to handle passing out of double teams in the post. The junior big man had five turnovers in 26 minutes on the floor against St. Bonaventure. Egbunu also looked winded at times in the second half despite sitting on the bench for long stretches in the first half due to foul trouble.

• On the subject of turnovers, Florida committed some loud ones against the Bonnies. Redshirt freshman forward Keith Stone had a bad crosscourt pass that was stolen and led to a St. Bonaventure runout basket in the first half. But the worst came with Florida up 66-63, when senior point guard Kasey Hill had a pass stolen by St. Bonaventure guard Matt Mobley, who dribbled down the court and tied the score at 66 with a three-point pay. Hill (4 points, 4 assists, 5 turnovers) needs to get back to playing as under control as he did at the end of last season.

• Defensively, Florida needs to do a better job closing out possessions. The Gators allowed 15 offensive rebounds against St. Bonaventure, which the Bonnies converted into 17 second chance points. This is where the lack of a true power forward hurts the Gators. It may be time to consider playing Egbunu and sophomore Kevarrius Hayes together to provide more size and physicality on the defensive boards.
