Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from FSU’s 73-71 win over Florida

Some observations following Florida State’s 73-71 win over Florida:

– Florida coach Mike White needed to bring in someone bigger to defend FSU freshman guard Dwayne Bacon in the final possession of the game. Junior DeVon Walker had the size (6-6) and lateral quickness to match up with Bacon, who hit a game-winning 10-footer with 4.6 seconds left. White talked about wanting to have both Hill and Chris Chiozza on the floor for transition offense after a miss or make, but at that point in a game, you need to worry about the stop first to at least force overtime. Florida certainly would have had the momentum if the game was tied at the end of regulation.

– Just another unfocused effort for Florida sophomore center John Egbunu, who continues to regress this month. The 6-foot-11 center had just 4 points, 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot before fouling out with 33 seconds left. Egbunu also missed his only two free throw attempts in the game and is 2 of his last 13 from the foul line. Early in the second half, Egbunu let a sure catch-and-follow dunk on an offensive rebound slip through his hands that would have cut FSU’s lead to 5 points. Instead, Florida State hit a transition 3-pointer and built its lead back to 13. The Gators need Egbunu to get back to playing at a higher level for Florida to have success in SEC play.

– Florida took a step back with its ball movement with 11 assists to 12 turnovers. Junior point guard Kasey Hill (2 assists, 5 turnovers) was shaky was his decision making and senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith threw an errant pass into press row. Florida had been good taking care of the ball of late, and needs to minimize mistakes in conference play.
