Some observations following Florida’s 65-56 win over Miami on Sunday afternoon:
— Florida won the game by being the more poised and opportunistic team, outscoring Miami 21-9 in points of turnovers. For the most part, UF point guards Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza made sound decisions as the Gators only had nine turnovers compared to Miami’s 13. Hill was confident at the free-throw line (8-10) and finished in transition the way he did late last season, when he averaged 15.4 points over UF’s final five games.
— Senior forward Justin Leon was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, but made a pair of big back-to-back baskets to put the Gators up 51-45 with under eight minutes remaining. Leon reminds me of Will Yeguete, a glue guy who does the little things to help teams win games.
— It would be nice to see senior forward Canyon Barry get back on track shooting the basketball. Barry is just 3 of his last 15 from the floor over his last two games after going 0 of 6 against Miami. Perhaps his finger injury is still bothering him. But Barry was able to contribute in other ways against the Hurricanes with two blocked shots, two steals and an assist in 15 minutes off the bench.
