Hard hittin’ Lawrence D. Wright III was born in Miami, Florida and was one of the best safeties to play at Florida. He played for Steve Spurrier during the Gator Glory Days in the 1990s, where he was pivotal in the Gators posting a 12-1 season on their way to a 1996 Bowl Alliance national championship. He won the Jim Thorpe Award as the best defensive back in college football in ’96, and was 1st-team All-SEC in ’95 and ’96. Lawrence managed to make the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four yeas and was a CFA Scholar-Athlete in ’96. He is remembered for leading the crowd in the “If you ain’t a Gator, you must be Gator bait” chant following their defeat of the Florida State Seminoles as they won the national championship. He returned to Gainesville to lead the crowd in the same cheer for both the 2006 and 2008 national championships. In 2007, the University of Florida Athletic Association enshrined him into the Hall of Fame as a Gator Great.
