With Little off board, what’s next for Gators

Last week, four-star 2018 forward recruit Nassir Little announced his final five schools.

Florida wasn’t on the list, which was met by disappointment by some in Gator Nation, considering the time and effort that Florida coach Mike White and his staff went into courting the young star from nearby Orange Park. Little was in the stands during UF’s 88-66 demolition of Kentucky on Feb. 4 at the new-look O’Dome and took numerous unofficial visits to UF since completing his freshman year at Oakleaf High in 2015.

One source told me that Little had a desire to play in the ACC, and judging from his final five list, it makes sense. Four of the five are ACC schools — Duke, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami and Arizona.

“His stock really took off during the summer, and when some of the blueblood programs got involved, it probably pushed some other teams out, ” said ESPN.com national recruiting analyst Jeff Borzello.

Florida remains in the market for wings and point guards to fill its 2018 class. Here’s a look at some of the prime targets:

Elijah Weaver (6-4, 195, pg, four-star, 46th in ESPN Top 100) – A four-star point guard recruit from Oldsmar (Fla.) Christian School, Weaver has set an official visit for Florida on Sept. 16, the weekend of UF’s football game at The Swamp against Tennessee. Weaver also has visits lined up with Ohio State and USC, while Louisville and Villanova remain in the hunt as well. Florida coaches can sell Weaver on a chance to win the starting point guard job with Chris Chiozza graduating following the 2017-18 season. At Oldsmar, Weaver played on the same team as current redshirt freshman forward Dontay Bassett and former guard Eric Hester, who transferred to Akron last April.

— Devon Dotson (6-2, 175, pg, four-star, 33rd in ESPN Top 100) – A Charlotte, N.C., Dotson took an unofficial visit to Florida last spring but has yet to line up official visits. Kansas and Arizona are also in play here and there’s a thought at the moment he’s leaning toward playing for the Jayhawks. But things can change quickly in recruiting.

— Khavon Moore (6-8, 195, sf, four-star, 45th in ESPN Top 100) — The Macon, Ga., native is being recruited by a handful of other SEC schools, including Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M. The Florida coaches have built a good relationship here, though. Moore is a wing with point-guard like skills who has excellent court vision in transition. He’d be a good fit in White’s up-tempo offense.

— Emmitt Williams (6-8, 220, pf. five-star, 12th in ESPN Top 100) — Though Florida is primarily targeting wings and guards in the 2018 class, it would make an exception with Williams, a McDonald’s All-American level talent. The Lehigh Acres native boasts a blend of skill and power rarely seen among high school prospects. Kansas, Louisville and Florida State are among schools who have also offered Williams, who is playing at IMG Academy in Bradenton. Florida coaches have a relationship with IMG, having signed 2017 incoming freshman center Isaiah Stokes from there last fall.
