Week 0 was not exciting without SEC games to follow, but here are the Power Conference scores:

• #14 USC 42, San José State 26 (Big Ten)
• North Carolina 15, TCU 10 (ACC and Big 12)
• Virginia 34, NC State 8 (ACC)
• Stanford 37, Hawai'i 27 (ACC)
• FSU 34, New Mexico State 17 (ACC)

FSU did not look good in the first three quarters of play, but they got the win over the Aggies of New Mexico State. FSU QB Ashton Daniels was 17/27 for 202 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and a passer rating of 130.62 plus 30 yards rushing on the ground. Ousamane Kromah ran for 115 yards. Otherwise, this team looks rather weak in the trenches.

One interesting matchup was Dan Mullen's UNLV team losing 21-27 to Memphis. The Memphis team featured QB Marcus Stokes, who was once committed to Florida before having his offer pulled after posting social media content that the coaching staff did not like. Stokes went 15/26 for 223 yards and a passer rating of 155.12.

The one notable “side note” in the above matchups from “Week 0” was the crowd size in the Coliseum for USC’s home opener…
The “announced attendance” was announced publicly at “51,000”;
Did anyone SEE a shot of the crowd? No WAY the count was even in the double DIGIT range there…a BALD-FACED LIE—a pathetically obvious face-saving effort by a program that has fallen far in the eyes and interest of its (ALWAYS somewhat “fair weather”) fans, take it from me…
I did grad-work there, still of course a GATOR through and through, and saw things close up.
On another note, I have only the vaguest memory of that whole Marcus Stokes controversy; I forget exactly what he said that got himself decommitted, and haven’t followed what appears to have been somewhat of a fall-off in his subsequent practical promise, career-wise.

I invested the time and effort to research/recall the “Marcus Stokes saga”:
It all came back pretty quick and clear—the online video of the “racial lyric” singalong…
I did understand, but even at the time felt the out-of-proportion, acceleratingly over-the-top widespread total shut down, slam-the-door-in-his-face rejection by one and all was a bit extreme—It struck ME as the kind of foolish, blindly naive mistake a youngster can make; I DIDN’T get he impression that it came from an intentionally racist place in the kid’s mind or heart. Just foolishly ignorant of danger and it’s potential consequences.
He took his lumps and paid his dues, however, and, 4 seasons later, has fought his way back to Division 1 Football and is now showing signs of the same 4-star talent that won him an SEC-level scholarship (after starring at the same highschool as Tebow) in the first place.
Between this tale, Cam Newton’s before him, Grier’s and Rashada’s separate stories since (and I could go on), the various unexpectedly turbulent outcomes in a procession of prospectively promising possible “Gator Careers That Never Happened” has me shaking my head as I trace and recount them all to MYSELF.

USC ticket holders have lots of money to throw around, but could not offload tickets on StubHub or any secondary markets so the tickets that were purchased but not used still count. All major programs do this, but it was blatantly obvious that the number of tickets sold versus tickets stamped at the gate were not the same.

I went to grad school there after graduating at UF…NEVER a Trojan fan, but went to some games—ESPECIALLY recall the first one I attended, my 2nd year there when the Gators came after beating them soundly the season before IN Gainesville (I believe they TIED us on a 2-point conversion at the end of play…this was back in the day when there weren’t yet “Tie-breaking procedures”).
Anyway, you may be right—it’s a big place: I thought maybe in the 5,000 range for that opener, but coulda been a few Gs more.
Buncha arrogant, spoiled jackasses, generally—but that film program was just first class, all the way—THAT part I admittedly enjoyed thoroughly and give the program much credit for.
