Note that the position names are mixed up in certain areas due to differences in schemes. Patrick Toney's 3-4 defense does not use a BUCK (hybrid linebacker. defensive end), EDGE (hybrid defensive end/ outside linebacker)--at least not in the same way as previous defenses--but it does use a JACK (defensive end/ weak-side linebacker). This defense will use parts of the Tampa-2 zone coverage with a ROBBER, where the robber is both a concept and a position, in this case the FREE safety. The field-side safety is the FREE safety. This defense will also make use of a BANDIT, where the bandit is both a concept and a position. In this case, the BANDIT is the boundary-side safety.

The difference between Toney's defense and other hybrid 3-4/4-3/3-3-5 defenses is that the positions are based on defensive reads more than they are dependent upon physical attributes--at least in the secondary and linebacking corps. On the defensive line, physical attributes will continue to dominate, but key OL positions will be asked to read the defensive line to adjust the blocking scheme. Before each snap the players on the field need to self-identify the STAR, MONEY, and MAC based on what they see and the available players on the field at the time.

It has been a while since the Gator athletes have been asked to read opposing teams, since the current trend has been for the coaches and sideline signal the pre-snap reads and teach the athletes just enough to adjust in the game.

Billy Napier does assign players homework as a means to learn the game, which is a refreshing difference between his plan and his predecessors.

At this time the Gators have 100 scholarship athletes, which means some of these athletes are going to be processed out in order to make the NCAA limit. The Gators have about 19 walk-ons.
