Gainesville, FL Florida freshman guard Nick Calathes (Casselberry, Fla.) added to his list of honors Thursday, by being selected to the NABC’s District 6 First Team.
Calathes was joined on the five-man squad by Richard Hendrix of Alabama, Jamont Gordon of Mississippi State, Robert Vaden of UAB and Demetric Bennett of South Alabama.
Calathes leads the Gators in scoring at 15.9 points per game, while leading the Southeastern Conference in assists per game at 6.1 per contest. He matched his career-high on Wednesday night against Tennessee with a 24-point outing, while adding nine assists in the Gators’ near upset of the fourth-ranked Volunteers.
He is just eight assists away from breaking the University of Florida single-season record for assists (190 by Ronnie Montgomery in 1987-88), and his 6.1 assists per game would break the 25-year-old UF single-season record. His 15.9 points per game are the highest ever for a Billy Donovan-coached freshman. Calathes is one of just two players in the nation to average better than 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists.
He is also averaging a team-best 17.0 points per game in SEC play.
