Florida junior quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) was selected as one of five student-athletes for the collegiate division of the fifth annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, as announced by Athletes for a Better World on Wednesday.

The Wooden Cup is given to a collegiate and a professional athlete who have made the greatest positive influence in the lives of others. The award recipients will be announced at a ceremony held at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Although Tebow’s athletic accomplishments have been greatly recognized, his contributions to the University of Florida, Gainesville community and communities across the world are equally as impressive. Due to his success on the gridiron for the Gators, the opportunities for him to reach out to the community have obviously amplified. Although his busy schedule prevents him from fulfilling all of his requests, Tebow has logged over 500 hours of community service and appearances this year, including making phone calls to sick children and going on hospital visits to pediatric wings. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner uses his success on the football field as a platform to spread his message. He understands that football provides him an opportunity to make positive changes in peoples’ lives and he takes advantage of that platform every chance he gets.

Brandon McArthur (Seffner, Fla.), a member of Florida’s baseball team, was selected as semifinalist for the award. With Peyton Manning, John Smoltz, John Lynch and Andrea Yaeger previous recipients, the Wooden Cup is becoming one of the most prestigious awards in all of sports. Recipients are considered role models and athletes of excellence both on and off the field.

Founded by Athletes for a Better World (ABW), a non-profit organization committed to changing the culture of American sports, the Wooden Cup is unique in that it is open to athletes in all collegiate and professional sports. Nominations come from every conference in the NCAA.

The Wooden Cup is named in honor of John Wooden, one of the most successful coaches in collegiate history. Wooden’s legacy as a person of integrity, high moral character, compassion and civic-mindedness continues to make him one of the most admired coaches in the history of sport.

Recipients of the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup are chosen by a committee chaired by Vincent Dooley, former University of Georgia athletics director, and other distinguished individuals involved in athletics across the country.

I don't know what those other guys have done to impact the lives of others, but Tim going to circumsize children from third world countries should put it in the bag for him.
