The Florida Gators men's basketball team suffered a tough loss last night in Columbia, South Carolina against the Gamecocks. South Carolina's Zam Fredrick made a layup as time expired to lift the Gamecocks to a 70-69 victory over No. 24 Florida. The loss snapped the Gators' 10-game win streak.
Florida (16-3, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) held a 67-60 lead with less than three minutes left before the Gamecocks began their comeback. South Carolina's Devan Downey hit four straight free throws and a 3-pointer with 26.5 seconds left to cut the lead to 69-67.
The Gators just missed a couple of free throws down the stretch. They had every opportunity to put this game away. As for the last second buzzer beater? That's all on Billy Donovan. He has to know that you need to stick a defender under their basket just in case. There's no way a Gamecock should have been able to run down the court uncontested. At worst the Gators should have just speared Frederick and put him on the line.
I've got a video of it for those of you who missed it. I love the look of the Gamecocks fans in the stands prior to Parsons missing the free throw, they think the game is over.
