Perspectives have changed for Florida's offense

"The thought of Florida’s offense having success against the Alabama defense seemed rather preposterous even a couple of weeks ago but perspectives have changed. The floundering Florida offense had an element of polish and explosiveness to it against Kentucky, while Alabama’s defense struggled at times to contain Arkansas before clamping down in the fourth quarter. Heading into Saturday’s clash of the SEC titans in Tuscaloosa (8 p.m., Bryant-Denny Stadium, CBS), the 7th-ranked Gators (4-0, 2-0 SEC East) appear to be coming into their own at just the right time.

The Florida offense is still “a work in progress” according to coordinator Steve Addazio, but it is starting to take on much more of an identity. In their 48-14 win over Kentucky, the Gators racked up a season-high 466 yards with 290 coming through the air. The passing game, which rarely took downfield shots in the first three games, was all about Johnny Brantley hitting receivers in stride with 12-14-yard darts that turned into additional yards after the catch. With freshman Trey Burton looking like Tim Tebow the way he converted direct snaps in the red zone into 5 rushing touchdowns, the spread offense had that element of a running quarterback that was clearly missing in the first three games. As impressive as the Kentucky win was, it was Kentucky. Let's keep that in perspective. Don't forget that "a work in progress" is tough to accelerate against the defending SEC and BCS champ that trounced us last year, and that Urban Meyer is 2-2 against Nick Saban.

On the bright side, it does feel good to be the underdog for the first time in a long time. Even better that we are under less pressure to win, and we have a built-in excuse if we do lose in Tuscaloosa. No excuse for Atlanta last year, just as there will not be one for this year in Atlanta.
