Sunshine State Showdown: A Desolate Derby Between Struggling Rivals

The annual Sunshine State Showdown between the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles, set for Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, has long been a marquee rivalry game with national title implications. But this year's edition feels more like a mercy kill than a marquee event. Both squads are limping to the finish line of a forgettable regular season, with the Gators at 3-8 (2-6 SEC) and the Seminoles at 5-6 (2-6 ACC). Florida, under interim coach Billy Gonzales after a midseason firing of Billy Napier, has lost four straight and is desperate to avoid its worst record since 1979 (0-10-1) or 1953 (1-9). FSU, meanwhile, clings to faint bowl hopes but enters as road underdogs for the first time in the series since 2021, having dropped eight straight away games (0-8 SU and ATS since 2023). Expect a sloppy, low-scoring affair in The Swamp, where Florida holds a commanding 22-13-1 all-time edge over FSU. The over/under sits at a miserly 50.5 points, reflecting two offenses that couldn't score in a phone booth and defenses that leak like sieves.

Offensive and Defensive Statistical Rankings Comparison

Both teams rank in the bottom half of FBS in most key categories through 11 games, underscoring their shared misery. Florida's attack has shown fleeting sparks under freshman QB DJ Lagway but averages just 22.1 points per game (104th nationally). FSU's unit, led by dual-threat transfer QB Tommy Castellanos, fares slightly better at 25.3 PPG (81st) but has crumbled in ACC play. Defensively, neither side stops much—Florida allows 31.2 PPG (102nd), while FSU's revamped secondary has been torched for 28.9 PPG (89th). Here's a head-to-head breakdown of key stats (national ranks via ESPN and NCAA.com through Week 12):
CategoryFlorida Gators (Rank)FSU Seminoles (Rank)Edge
Points Per Game (Off)22.1 (104th)25.3 (81st)FSU
Total Yards Per Game (Off)345.2 (98th)378.4 (72nd)FSU
Rushing Yards Per Game (Off)142.3 (72nd)168.7 (48th)FSU
Passing Yards Per Game (Off)202.9 (102nd)209.7 (89th)FSU
Points Per Game Allowed (Def)31.2 (102nd)28.9 (89th)FSU
Total Yards Per Game Allowed (Def)415.6 (110th)392.1 (92nd)FSU
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game (Def)168.4 (98th)154.2 (78th)FSU
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game (Def)247.2 (92nd)237.9 (81st)FSU
Turnover Margin-4 (96th)-6 (112th)Florida
FSU holds a slight edge across the board, particularly in rushing attack and overall defensive solidity, but neither team excels at protecting the ball or generating stops. Florida's home-field advantage (and FSU's road woes) could level the playing field in this battle of the unbeatens... in mediocrity.

Key Players to Watch (Injury-Free Edition)

With both rosters battered by injuries—Florida missing 12 players including DE George Gumbs Jr. and DT Michai Boireau, while FSU sits DB Ja'Bril Rawls for the year and lists RB Samuel Singleton Jr. as questionable—the focus shifts to reliable performers who are fully healthy and cleared to play. Here's a trio who could swing this snoozer:

  1. DJ Lagway, QB, Florida GatorsThe sophomore phenom (healthy after a minor spring tweak) has been Florida's lone offensive bright spot, completing 62% of passes for 2,100+ yards, 14 TDs, and just 6 INTs in eight starts. His mobility (45 rushing yards vs. Tennessee last week) could exploit FSU's middling run defense, but turnovers have plagued the Gators' -4 margin. Lagway's poise in The Swamp might be the difference in a must-win for interim coach Gonzales.
  2. Tommy Castellanos, QB, FSU Seminoles. The Boston College transfer (no reported issues post-early-season scare) brings dual-threat dynamism, rushing for 450 yards and 7 TDs while passing for 1,800 yards and 12 scores. FSU leans on his legs against Florida's porous front seven (98th vs. the run), but his 8 INTs highlight inconsistency. A clean game from Castellanos could secure bowl eligibility and give Mike Norvell a lifeline.
  3. Jadan Baugh, RB, Florida Gators. Heading into 2025's Florida State rivalry, Baugh leads UF with 904 rushing yards, 11 TDs, and 25 receptions for 212 yards, positioning him 96 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard season amid the team's 3-8 struggles. He's a Doak Walker Award watch-lister and dual-threat asset with 5.4 yards per carry.
  4. Samuel Singleton, Jr, RB, FSU Seminoles. Amid FSU's 5-6 campaign under Mike Norvell and new OC Gus Malzahn's run-heavy scheme, Singleton has solidified as the top back, leading the team with 812 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns, and 5.2 yards per carry through 11 games. He's added 18 receptions for 145 yards, showcasing his explosiveness (four runs of 40+ yards), though fumbles (three) and the Seminoles' shaky O-line have capped his output. Fully healthy and probable for the Florida rivalry, Singleton's speed could test the Gators' 98th-ranked run defense, making him a pivotal X-factor in FSU's push for bowl eligibility.

Prediction: Florida 20, Florida State 23

This match-up screams regression to the mean—two flawed teams canceling each other out in a gritty, mistake-filled affair. FSU's slight statistical edges and upset pedigree (early win over Alabama) make them live dogs (+1.5), but Florida's home desperation and Lagway's upside tip the scales. The Noles get bowl eligible and the Gators end their season on a low note. Chomp on, Gators—it's the only highlight left in this dismal Swamp Saturday.

The Gators probably will not win the game, but we can win the meme war.

Even things like "pride", "tradition", and "cross state rivals" have seemingly been reduced to outright irrelevance by now--certainly these mean little in the minds or souls of players who in this not-so-brave new world see THEMSELVES as little more than "hired guns", concerned only with who is paying "here-and-now", and who might fulfill that role NEXT season.
What a depressing mess.
Only a few of the new breed of Coaches seem to have any insight into and realization of this altered reality, and hence are evolving plans designed to maximize their opportunities to assemble properly balanced TEAMS, and then how to lead them to resulting success--and the guy WE are after appears to BE one of those "few"…

…Maybe the best sign of how far UF’s program in particular has sunk, and FSU’s followed similarly downward, is the very fact that this “annual rivalry” to close out the season during “Rivalry Week” means so little—even to the fans of each of the participating schools.
Speaking just for ourselves, I have to say that the game itself—even BEFORE counting in the possibility of denying their eligibility for a bowl appearance, has always been enough: It meant something just to be facing them to end the year, WHATEVER the wider context.
But any talk of “just pure pride” has been by now long drowned out by another discussion entirely—one having nothing to DO with the dummies cross state or indeed ANY OTHER game being played (unless you mean the ones playing out on phones, online and in offices around the South (AND by extension every sports section in America).

Hard to get especially excited about this incarnation of the once rabid rivalry.
Concern about our future to a great extent eclipsing the normal “in all kinds of weather” obsessive enthusiasm we as Gators commonly find stirring our souls regardless of record or wider context…but I WILL watch, knowing our fellows will pack the Swamp and will show out in usual crazed style.
I know that will stir me;
I can only hope it will not only carry us through, but at least still be there to carry us OVER, make this season’s one last round of “Won’t Back Down” a factor in at least ONE satisfying finish…
That may be all of anything LIKE it we GET for a while.

I awoke this morning to the by now torrent of “EVERYONE knows this is a done deal—the absolute TRUTH”-level headlines…
The part that gets ME is that whenever, WHEREVER I actually dig deeper and look INTO the supposed “FACTS” in underlying these entries it turns out to be another 2nd- or 3rd-hand story that somehow further INFERS the veracity of the “common knowledge”—Florida insiders who say “Lane has been erratic in his communications last few days”, so they are moving while meanwhile “reports that Lane’s people are lining up potential staff members for his new job at this sort of thing.
We’ve never seen a situation quite like this one before; is this how it would work?
“Lane himself is unique; is it any real surprise that he would do things in a strangely outlandish way?”
All I KNOW in the end is that among the various clickbait YouTube lessons I choose in near compulsively random fashion, half asleep upon awakening in hopes of some quick clarification this morning, along with all-of-the-above and MORE is the sudden loud intrusive insult of a bunch of LSU “insiders” from various well known sites together loudly and merrily chanting,
“It SUCKS. To BE. A Florida GATOR!
I said it SUCKS. To BE. A Florida GATOR!!!”
And as this happy chorus continues as background, one of their familiar regulars crows into the camera:
“How DARE you losers think you are on OUR level—could even BEGIN to compete with US for ANYTHING?!!”
It went on—but at that point I shut it all down and went back to sleep.
At least I TRIED…
After an extended period of steam coming out my ears as I lay alone in the dark, I got up and got dressed, looking to at least distract myself…
“On with the show—
Good HEALTH to you!”
Right about now, realizing that we may be moving into a time we will later recall as
“The Time of Tribulations, when our greatest fears were made REAL!!!”,
I wonder if I am, if WE ARE in fact losing our last refuge, the last place of reliable hope, comfort and joy:
Gator Football.

Arguably the best driver of the year.

Congratulations to Jaden Baugh for eclipsing 1,000 yards on the season. He is the first to hit that mark since Kelvin Taylor in 2015. He is the first underclassman to do so since Emmitt Smith in 1987.

Am watching this one, where we came out and started fast for a change, drove the field fir an apparent TD catch, a BEAUTY by VBIII--and if course thry took it away, overturned it on scant evidence after watching it over and over again in slow motion. Settled for 3.
Now driving again--but stalling with unimaginative play-calling from interim whatever, as we wait for WHOMEVER to come in and do something or other.
Yay...we score. Oh joy.
Meanwhile, the various media outlets (including the announcers for this one) are saying that "Florida has withdrawn from pursuit of Lane Kiffen, moving on to current Tulane Coach Sumrall..."
If that particular way of putting the situation is indeed accurate, Stricklin ought to be fired within MOMENTS after the dust begins to settle...
We demanded just ONE THING here:
That they SELL OUT on going after Lane--that it amount to "Kiffen or BUST".
I don't CARE if it turns out that this "Turnkey" company we are paying minions to recommended this move--we were to STAY IN THIS TIL THE VERY END.
....aaaaannnnd missed coverage, then a slew of missed tackles and FSU is in the endzone.
10-7 Gators in the 2nd quarter.
So it goes.
As I was saying, Stricklin and Co. had but ONE directive: "GO AFTER KIFFEN, REGARDLESS, TO THE VERY END."
Period.
Make him say "NO" to what supposedly was once his "dream job".
It appears that they couldn't even do THAT--or (I suspect more likely, found what Stricklin thought was a valid excuse to look elsewhere: He NEVER wanted to hire Kiffen--passed on a clear shot at him last year in favor of keeping the mostly inept Napier.
Meanwhile, Gators driving again, but here's tgd thing: The better they look, the more it seems to mock us. (BAUGH SURPASSES 1000 YARDS! FIRST UNDERCKASSMAN TO DO SO SINCE EMMITT):
Even with all the injuries, this is STILL a talented enough team to have acquitted itself at least COMPETENTLY over the course of what was admittedly one helluva tough schedule.
Another TD pass: Fake handoff to Baugh, then a dart to Livingston for 6.
17-7 Gators, 5 minutes and change left in first half.
Until we revamp THE WHOLE STRUCTURE OF LEADERSHIP IN THE UF ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT, there will BE no dramatic change in our fortune of mediocrity.
Even HERE: Our offense finally somewhat awakens, but our injury-riddled defense begins to show signs of znogher soft collapse.
As Gator, I want to see us win this REGARDKESS of his little difference it makes to us as fans:
Knocking "THOSE guys" out of bowl eligibility would be small, temporary but nonetheless satisfying consolation.
FUMBLE!
We deny them late in the half.
BUT: Officials will rule by replay--which hasn't gone well very often for us lately.
But it does here...GATOR BALL.
Let's see what we can do these last few moments, see if we can.
Only Lagway throws a bad INT.
THAT IS IT.
I cannot watch anymore .
We are TALENTED LOSERS.
Lane coulda turned that around FAST, but he ain't coming...and I think it is because our twisted AD craves personal control over all else.
(IN addition to which, he MAY just hate FOOTBALL!).
Anyway, I am done here.
I will be back for further comment later in the 2nd half.

(Y'all can see the same things I can see.
And hearing that we are "out of the competition for Lane because our OWN people withdrew pursuit, supposedly because they "saw signs of disinterest"--IT IS THE FINAL INSULT!
"In it til the END" MEANS JUST THAT : As I recall, the idea was to "MAKE HIM SAY NO"...
But instead, WE caved. Pretty well "par" for this program's course under this regime.
I am just so SICK of it--ALL OF IT!
I try am now reaching the point where I DON'T CARE (as VBIII drops the perfect throw wide open streaking for the endzone):
This season's end is coming just in time, far as I'm concerned.
Sorry, friends.
I actually am beginning to LOATHE this particular incarnation of the Florida Gators, top to bottom.
We are about yo lose most of the talent that remains our one remaining positivd feature.
This (perhaps overly long) dissertation is MY way of saying "Bye for now!", I suppose.

Cannot STAND the inane blather of this ESPN 3 third-string announcers team.
Tuned back in to check score, but have sound turned off now...Observation in passing: They WILL have to do something in ADDITION to running Baugh into thd line if they wanna pit this one away...Too much time left to simply run run run.
I don't eve know dhy I am watching again.
I just have this overwhelming feeling of hopelessness for the foreseeable future washing over and through me.
Gators score AGAIN--Long drive on shoulders of inestimable Baugh.
And yet, if this counted for ANYTHING we'd be sweating things out, even with a 17 point lead late in the 3rd. We are that kind of unreliable, can't-depend-on-ANYTHING team.
Let's see if we can hold on...
Then it's on to MORE hopeless floundering in regards to our future, regardless of whatever we manage here in the present.

See what I mean?
We can't even properly close out a lengthening win, one where we are DOMINATING ON OFFENSE for a change.
Our D actually held up its end for a good part of the 2nd half--but has slacked off at the end.
Typical.
Baugh IS a BEAST, though.
232 yards so far today--a record for an RB in this game.
BUT...
I mean, in the larger picture, the real question is "WHAT NOW?!!"
For us, the relative meaning shrinks to "SO WHAT?" the moment it is over.
I really HATE everything about ALL OF THIS.

Bye Bye to FSU's bowl chances.
Yes—The one solid piece of “Schaddenfreud” satisfaction (beyond the simple joy of beating our mentally-challenged cross-state rival ANY time, of course) bringing us SOME satisfaction at season’s end AFTER ALL.
