"The University of Toledo hired Saban as its head coach in 1990. If the Saban-Toledo link sounds unfamiliar, that is because Saban bolted after one year to become Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns.
Anyway, Saban was trying to assemble a staff at Toledo and Meyer was a 26-year-old assistant at Illinois State looking for a chance to move out of a frustrating and struggling program.
So he called Saban’s house. He didn’t get Saban, but instead reached his wife, Terry. She was impressed."
