All three members of the University of Florida men's tennis team who advanced on the opening day of the 2007 SEC Coaches’ Indoor Championship were defeated Saturday at the Rivercenter Racquet and Health Club in New Orleans.
After wins Friday, juniors Nestor Briceno (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Greg Ouellette (Ormond Beach, Fla.) represented the Gators in the “A” Flight Saturday against members of the Georgia squad. Briceno, ranked 60th nationally, dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to John Isner, who is ranked No. 2 and is the top-seed in the event. Ouellette (No. 16) also fell short in straight sets Matic Omerzel (No. 66) took a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
In the “B” draw, freshman Geoffrey Barton (Boca Raton, Fla.) opened with a 6-1 showing in the first set before Tennessee’s Chris Racz held off Barton in the second and third sets (1-6, 6-4, 6-4).
Two Gators also picked up wins in consolation matches Saturday evening. Shaun Young (Brandon, Fla.) defeated Tennessee’s Johnny Thornton in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) and Dan Cash (Oslo, Norway) edged Mississippi State’s Ryan Farlow, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6).
No. 17 Florida opens the dual match season against UCF in Gainesville on Wednesday, Jan. 31. at 3 p.m.
