Men's Swimming's Nead Named SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year

Gainesville, FL University of Florida senior Kevin Nead (Ithaca, N.Y.),of the men’s swimming and diving team, has been named the Southeastern Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for swimming as announced by the conference office. Head Coach Gregg Troy was tabbed as the SEC Female Swimming Co-Coach of the Year, sharing honors with Matt Kredich of Tennessee.

Nead, who became just the second male athlete in school history to receive the award when he was honored last season, now becomes the first male athlete in school history to receive the distinction two years in a row.

A pre-med and zoology major, Nead holds a 3.97 GPA and rejoined the Gators in January after spending six months in Lille, France studying the genetics of Type II Diabetes. His time abroad was thanks to the Howard Hughes Medical Research Fellowship that Nead received as one of three awards granted each year for full funding to work with a prestigious research lab. Nead studied under Dr. Phillippe Froguel, the first most cited Diabetes researcher in the world.

As a result of his time in France, Nead is the co-first author of an article titled, “The genetic architecture of Type II Diabetes is modulated by obesity status.” The journal will be submitted to a peer review journal and has been presented at the French Association for the research on obesity and is scheduled to be presented at the French Association for the study of Diabetes and metabolic diseases at the end of March. While in France, Nead was also the primary organizer of the 4 Centuries 4 Diabetes Bike Ride across France that raised $3,500 for the American Diabetes Association.

The senior is a two-time Florida Swimming and Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year and has been selected to the Dean’s list six times and President’s list three times. Nead is an ESPN The Magazine All-American, a two time CoSIDA Academic All-American and has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll two years running. He was recently inducted into UF’s Matthew’s Society, an honorary student/community leadership group and is the William Carleton Scholarship recipient, given to one student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences each year.

Nead is a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier (2004, 2008), two-time U.S. Nationals finalist, two-time All-American and a four-time All-SEC honoree. Nead took 15th place in the 400 IM at the 2007 National Championships, swimming a life-time best of 3:49.67.
