Hall of Fame coach Charlie Bachman coached the 1928 Florida Gators to an 8-1 (6-1 SoCon) record and helped Dale Van Sickel become the first Gator All-American. At the time, the Gators played home games at Fleming Field, which only held 15,000. The success of the 1928 Gators accelerated John Tigert's decision to build and the 22,000-seat Florida Field that was completed in 1930. The Gators finished third in the Southern Conference behind #3 Georgia Tech (10-0-0, 7-0-0) and Tennessee (6-0-1, 9-0-1).
