Well, here come the "WAY Early Rankings for 2019"... Naturally, the "Always Plan To Fight The LAST War" and "Me-TOO" mentality for the most part has last season's FFF (Football Final Four), plus Ohio State and one or two perennial ("sooner or later they've GOT to be good!") OTHER teams ahead of us, then us and Texas now pretty well-installed in the second half of their Top Tens.
Don't know bout y'all, but this is just the START of what will be building all summer--and I'm already sick of it! How bout all of you? Look, I'll TAKE a UF vs UT (LongHorns) semi in January, winner to play the outcome of the Clemson/ Bama "other semifinal", were that to be how things go--take it WITH EXCITEMENT and PLEASURE!
We're not quite the complete and finished product, the "known quantity" that has eliminated "chance" from the outcome, for the most part (much as possible, at any rate): We will still be depending too much on "luck" and "circumstance" this season, all that PLUS the emotional factors arising from COACHING, and the degree we "hit our stride" as a "TEAM". And this time, unless he continues his apparent "fast closing rise towards hyper-competence", Filipe Franks will NOT be stepping into the "Tim Tebow"-role. It isn't fair to ask, let alone EXPECT that of him (or anyone else: We should know better: There is/was only ONE...and yet, deep down, almost every one of us is secretely hoping "well maybe, just MAYBE, he's gonna be really good--he sure LOOKS better, more accurate, confident, knows the playbook best by far..." Look: In tge long run, we are more likely gonna "get there" with an eventually-blossoming Emory Jones coming into his own and running a true version of the Dan Mullen "What'll They Do Next?"-Spread Offense...For now, though, our participation in FFF 2019-20 edition apparently depends on the aforementioned Franks-turns-into-Tebow as a Senior scenario, where we MAYBE lose just ONE game the whole year, lose that early, sweep through our SEC schedule undefeated, and so on...the others find their own way in similar fashion and we somehow GET IT DONE.
Only by NEXT year, by which time experience and further depth across-the-board added on the O-line and elsewhere, will we finally be in position to eliminate "chance" as a determinant in our eventual record.
Risking "jinx factors", Mullen and Co I now believe have us within striking distance of plausible "perfection"--where there are alternative paths to victory on both a "game-by-game" AND "season-by-season ahead" basis. They have not, ARE not building toward ONE Natty, but rather a SERIES of RUNS towards them on an annual basis for years to come.
The KEY has become a Head Coach's (and his appreciated and likewise well-compensated in every way STAFF'S) ongoing successful effort to convince and reassure prospective recruits at key positions that their turns will come, that their health, success and public profiles are in good and reliable hands, that the guts who recruited them are and will be there and that things continue to go in just the way they'd hoped and signed on for. Of course, all that is getting harder and harder, the inevitable consequence being that at QB, for eg (most visibly "key" of them all), this is getting harder and harder to do: It is less and less likely to hold onto a THIRD highly-touted prospect, keep him from jumping to another program, no matter how "lesser" the conference. WE just lost one again--and really, it was to be expected. Basically have to be "glad" it was truly "the 3rd or 4th guy on the depth chart", no matter his skills and agreed upside...
All in all, for the most part, we are healthy, confidently moving forward and on target as we regather and head into the summer. This is as "together" as I have felt and/or seen our squad at a similar point in the year in a long time.
