Gainesville, FL Two University of Florida soccer players received honors Monday based on their play last weekend. Sophomore defender Lauren Hyde (Carmel, Ind./Bishop Chatard H.S.) is the TopDrawer Soccer National Player of the Week and senior Ashley Harris (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast H.S.) is the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Hyde made a key save in Florida's 2-1 win Sunday versus No. 9 Florida State. FSU’s Sarah Wagenfuhr’s shot looked like it was going to score at the near post in the 48th minute, but Hyde cleared the ball off the line. A few minutes later she also cleared another dangerous ball out of the UF box. Hyde, who led the 2006 Gators in total minutes played, leads the Florida field players again in 2007, playing every minute of Florida's four matches. She has started every match played by Florida during her collegiate career (29 starts). This is the first player of the week honor of Hyde's collegiate career.
Harris made her first appearance as a forward this weekend and through the two matches, equaled the goal output of her previous three seasons of collegiate action. Harris was pushed up to the Gator frontline during the Sept. 7 Florida versus USF match and scored twice in a three-minute span (goals coming in the 64th and 67th minute). In Sunday's match versus No. 9 Florida State, Harris' header to the far post in the 16th minute gave UF the early lead. Harris, who was a 2005 All-SEC Second Team selection as a defender, has played center back, outside back and wide midfield during her collegiate career. As a junior, she turned in the first three goals of her collegiate career. In 2007, she leads UF with three goals and shares the points lead with senior KeLeigh Hudson at six. This is the first player of the week honor of her Gator career.
Next up, the Gators head to the Midwest for their first road trip of the season. Action opens at Illinois on Friday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m (ET). The action for that match can be heard live on WRUF-AM 850 and will also be shown on the Big Ten Network. Then Florida heads to Des Moines, Iowa, to face Drake on Sunday, Sept. 16. GatorVision subscribers can see the UF-Drake match when play begins at 2 p.m. (ET).
