The Florida Gators men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2008 season last night against Syracuse in the O Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Gators lost 89-83 and are now 3-1 on the season.

Great statistical performances by Alex Tyus and Nick Calathes weren't enough to put the Gators on top. Tyus ledf the Gators in scoring with 24 points (4 rebounds) in 27 minutes played. Calathes followed him with 19 points (7 assists) in 35 minutes played.

The Gators were able to play some solid defensive ball by coming up with 12 steals, but they were out rebounded 40-30 by Syracuse. Great defense can wins games, but you need to control the boards. The Orange also shot 51 percent from the field, while Florida hit 46 percent of its shots. Syracuse was able to spread the ball around... they had 5 players in double digit scoring.

Hopefully this loss will help keep the Gators in check. We want our team to be confident, but we don't want them to be cocky. Making the tournament is all the Gators need to accomplish this season, and there's still plenty of time to reach that goal.

The Gators will be back in action Tuesday in the consolation final of the CBE Classic and will face Washington at 7:45 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast by ESPNU.
