Gator Basketball Update

The Gator Men's Basketball schedule has approached mid-season, with tonight's game against Longwood being the final non-conference game of the regular season. The Gators are 12-2, with losses coming from Syracuse and Florida State (they always beat us). In comparison to last season, the Gators were 14-2 heading into SEC competition, and still missed the NCAA Tourney.

The Gators are a young, talented team. Some of the surprises this season are Alex Tyus and Erving Walker. Tyus has stepped up and filled the void Speights left by averaging 13.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg. Tyus is only averaging 25 minutes a game, but it would be great if he can get the rebounds closer to double digits. Walker has been an awesome addition to the starting lineup once Lucas left. He's actually much better then Lucas in terms of assists and points.

Nick Calathes, Dan Werner and Walter Hodge are performing as expected. In addition to scoring, their the leaders of this team and will be looked to when the tough gets going during SEC competition. 6 of their first 10 SEC games are on the road, so they'll need to start off hot if they want to contend for a NCAA Tourney spot.

Through mid-season, the Gators basketball team is on par with what fans should have expected. Strong showings in non-conference play is expected, and anything less would have been a disappointment. The true measures come in January and February... that's when we'll see what the Gators are made of.
