The Florida Gators (5-1) clinched their fifth win of the season with a 86-65 victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos (3-5) at Amway Arena in Orlando as part of Sunday’s Gator Jam. In the first meeting between the two schools, sophomore forward Alex Tyus led the charge for UF with a career-high 25 points, and a season-high eight rebounds as the Gators moved to 31-3 overall in the month of November.
The Gators started out a little sloppy (10 turnovers in the first half alone) and were only up by 8 points at half time. Coach Billy Donovan showed some concern. "We're going to have some growing pains, but I really like what our young guys bring to this team," Donovan said. "They're very coachable and winning is important to them."
Two other Gators made it to double-digit scoring, and surprisingly Calathes wasn't one of them. Erving Walker scored 13 points in 28 minutes of play and Chandler Parsons scored 17 points in 28 minutes of play. Having players come of the bench to eat minute and score points is one of the keys to success in the NCAA.
I was impressed that the Gators shot 80% from the free-throw line as a team. Usually they're in the 60 percentile. Now they just need to work on turnovers. "We probably could have scored 100 points, but not with 21 turnovers," Donovan said. "And it seemed like every time we turned it over, they ended up with a layup at the other end."
The Gators will be back in the O'Dome on December 2 when they host Florida A&M.
