Week 8: NR Florida Gators Bye Week (mid-season trends)

The mighty Gators are at a crossroads this week. Dan Mullen's record is 4-6 (0.400) since December 2020. Mullen's overall record at Florida is currently 33-12 (73.33%). If he loses to UGA as many of us expect, his record will fall to 33-13 (71.74%) and he will be at 4-7 (36.4%) since December 2020. Mullen will need to win out in order to finish at 37-13 (74.00%) and bring his record above 0.500 since the loss to LSU.

The Gators' woes can be attributed to three major reasons:
1. Questionable head coaching
2. Horrible defensive coaching and execution
3. Inconsistent quarterback play

Dan Mullen will need to pull his head out of his *** during the bye week and get his headspace back to where it was in November 2020. On defense the Gator defense is merely showing complete incompetence displayed by Todd Grantham, whose defense has plummeted from #9 in the nation to #43. In 2020 this maligned unit finished #74 in the nation after finishing #7 in 2019 and #20 in 2018. On offense the Gators are #26 and are on track to tumble below previous rankings of #22 in 2018, #29 in 2019, #13 in 2020 (#1 in efficiency),

At quarterback EJ5 is 118/175 (67.43%) for 1304 yards, 10 TD, 9 INT and a rating of 138.6. AR15 is 21/37 (56.7%) for 392 yards, 5 TD, 3 INT and a rating of 174.1 in limited action. Richardson has the clear advantage in floor and ceiling with a low expected passer rating of 160 and a high of 220. Jones' floor and ceiling based on passer rating is 118 and 130.

Although not ideal the Gators' season is not in complete shambles. If the Gators win out they can still play for a bowl game. At this point the Gators could still finish 7-5 and play for the Liberty, Birmingham, or Gasparilla Bowl. At best the Gators could luck themselves into the Dukes' Mayo or Music City Bowl.

Only significance of a bowl-game appearance is of course a big one: mainly the extra month-plus of practice, in-game experience etc (WHICH bowl not all that significant at this point—Just get to one!).
Beyond that, all THREE of your points are notable and central to our current plight!
It’s staring us all in our (and let’s face it, our regents’ and boosters’) collective “face”: Our Coach was taking a questionable chance in sticking with Grantham after LAST season;
WHY IS HE STILL HERE?!!
“Grantham”, that is—but if it isn’t being asked regarding Mullen YET, it soon likely WILL be, I am somewhat sad to say.
I MEAN it: There is a pall hanging over the program this week...a heavy silence that just reeks of failure and impending doom. I SWEAR: It feels as if, as the days go by and nothing happens, nothing is said, and Grantham is still HERE, there is a growing feeling that one way or another, Coach himself is gone...The idea being “if he’s still here it’s because they’ve got no one with sufficient stature and promise to REPLACE him.”
Like the various ways that Mullen has brought the ONFIELD problems on himself, so has his stubborn, silent inaction has exacerbated the OFF-field ones.
I await SOME sort of dramatic, positive move(s) to throw us ALL a “lifeline” —“RIGHT THE SHIP”!
But so far, nothing.
It is shocking:
How far we’ve fallen, how FAST.
Looking more and more like he simply doesn’t HAVE any answers.

What a mess.
This has become a familiar feeling each and every SEASON of late—and “late-season” has come EARLIER AND EARLIER for us here at UF!
To find ourselves NOWHERE, with so little to play for WEEKS BEFORE JACKSONVILLE—this has all deteriorated into “PRE-RETURN-of-SPURRIER territory”!!!
Wrong time to “run away and hide”, too, Coach!

Also, Mullen's future hinges on keeping Richardson. If Richardson leaves, it at least heats up the hot seat.
It’s our greatest fear, and greatest DANGER right now.
If AR15 bails now it’ll be as a result of Mullen’s own mishandling of a shaky situation at a crucial moment
...It’s a part of the reason our Coach needed to ACT during the Bye-Week—at the very least deal with the whole situation with Grantham and the Defense; if he focuses on that alone it takes a lot of the pressure and locker room tension off the offense:
The QB confusion, controversy and the Coach’s own indecision somewhat, at least for the moment.
To return to the already tired metaphor, it’s a leaky ship in real danger of going down; rats are already leaving.
We lose Richardson now, the one remaining “symbol of hope” from Mullen’s supposed “strong suit” goes with him.
Tip the key domino and watch them ALL fall!

Mullen's future does not necessarily hang on AR-15, but having a game-changing athlete on the roster does conceal other weaknesses. I doubt a Gainesville native like AR15 already making decent NIL money would transfer unless Mullen were fired and the new coach brought in his favorite transfer QB. Mullen's future will definitely hinge upon the success of Todd Grantham, because Mullen controls the hiring of assistant coaches and the athletic director controls the hiring of head coaches.

Yes—That whole NIL-thing does add another layer of complication in analyzing AR’s vulnerability to bailing on us;
I too was struck by how that seemed to LIMIT the likelihood somewhat when I first heard/saw/read about it. I’d still like to see our Head Coach more actively and enthusiastically make the kinds of related QB-moves more in keeping with his talents and reputation...but meanwhile, your argument that the main focus now more than ever being on his handling of our defensive woes in general—and the Grantham situation, specifically his presence here, in particular—is more to the point. It seems more a matter now of when, not “IF” he will be gone. The part that worries some of us lately is how so many of these multiple (and multiplying) problems have seemed to be met with a kind of “indecision” of late:
“Sh*t HAPPENS!”—but a good Head Coach and his staff DEALS with them! Rolls up their sleeves and gets into fighting them “with both hands”!
Up until quite recently, we were all pretty confident that we HAD “a good Head Coach”, for SURE! Only the seeming “sudden-indecision” has thrown that into question.
Now I’m just hoping for something, anything to change that impression. It’s pretty clear Coach waited too long for his DC to shape this defense into competitive form. What is to be done NOW—and when will Mullen DO it?!!
