Week 7/ 4: #10 Florida Gators vs LSU Tigers (postponed from 10/17 to 12/12)

The game scheduled for 10/17 has been postponed to 12/12. Prior to cancellation the Gators were an 11.5-point favorite with an O/U of 71.5 points. Florida (2-1) was -435 to win outright, and LSU (1-2) was +335. My prediction would have been a 48-36 victory for the Gators.

The Gators lead the all-time series 33-30-3. The Gators and Tigers first met on 9/25/1937 in Baton Rouge, which was a 0-19 victory for LSU. The last meeting was a 28-42 victory for LSU in Baton Rouge. LSU and Florida have split their games with Dan Mullen at UF.

When these two teams meet again in December, it will be interesting to note which team has made the necessary adjustments. Both of the offenses have been performing well in the passing game, but horribly in the run game. LSU is dead last on third down at 0/10 last week against Missouri and 9/39 overall. Both defenses have been horrible and are not worth describing here. Perhaps a two-week pause in athletic activities will give the Gators time to re-evaluate the defense for Missouri on 10/24 or Georgia on 11/7.

I appreciate your efforts to carry on, brother...even MORE so your upbeat assumptions regarding its relevance.
But personally, I feel we have already been robbed of a great deal of whatever “redemption” we might otherwise have expected, or at least HOPED for, from the return of Gator football this Fall to lift us from the otherwise “emotional wasteland” that was (and now once more it seems IS) our post-Covid desolation (AND a time of political friction and uncivilized vitriol, to boot).
Yes, I am down. Sorry. I really AM finally inclined to back away entirely for a time; I KNOW I have become a tired, repetitive “curmudgeonly voice of doom” here, and fear I am by now more a part of the problem rather than the solution.
Give me some recovery time; I’ll continue to watch, listen, read and consider. But I may not have much to say until I am fairly sure I have something new, hopeful and positive to add.

(By-the-way, In-passing—Monitoring the SEC games almost IN-SPITE-of-myself, and all that:
Will probably just watch a movie instead at SOME point here, but for the moment I AM following these SEC matchups on a Saturday afternoon. Two patterns continue to emerge:
(1) ALL the SEC defenses (except Alabama, AND built-like-an-elite-SEC-clone Clemsen) are currently suspect, and
(2) In most cases these all-SEC schedules are indeed in effect “feeding on themselves” in self-destructive fashion, from a “big picture” P.O.V.
Still not sure how “good” Georgia really is, but though it “ain’t fair”, besides the Tide even a ONE-loss SEC team may not ultimately make the Football Final Four.
One MORE reason this is shaping up to end up a “Bullsh*t Season” after all.
Ah well. Unless that “One Loss Team” somehow turned out to be our Gators, I just wouldn’t give a damn, couldn’t care less.
(Meanwhile, watching Muschamp and his South Carolina squad snatch another defeat from the jaws of victory—just watched US do it AGAIN OURSELVES last weekend; too many painful memories, old and new.
We GOTTA get at least a MINIMALLY effective defense!)

...and now it’s Saturday evening and (can’t help myself) I’m watching UGA at Bama. Bulldogs are handling a clearly vulnerable Tide “bend-and-only-SLIGHTLY-break” defense—good enough to dominate the SEC when Tua was leading their offense but NOT with Mac Jones, it seems so far.
Can’t quite bring myself to root for Georgia, but at least from “the hopeful GATOR fan’s” P.O.V., probably the smart play: Even with a dramatic reversal in the performance of our defense and a resulting clean run of wins all the way to the PARTY, only a win over an undefeated Bulldogs team there would bring us ALL THE WAY BACK, effectively reclaiming the 2020 season after all.
NOT that that’s the scenario I’M counting on playing out from here.
Sorry, but that AIN’T exactly the “flow” of things for or with us now.
I just don’t know we even have the people available on our depth chart to pull OFF that miracle, for one thing.
I SO want to be wrong—but in a time of repeated disappointment I cannot afford to count on self-delusion.

“Bad Timing” Dept.:
As Alabama and Georgia are fully demonstrating once more this season, this is a bad time in the SEC for teams to be dominant on offense but devoid of defense: There was a time not so long ago that perhaps the reverse was true—you could have a good record, play on New Years Day, but you couldn’t win Championships. Now the opposite may be the case—and in our case, without DRAMATIC mid-season readjustment and improvement, perhaps even THAT could be ultimately beyond our reach THIS year.

Of course, the fact that UGA’s “4th-string QB makes good”-story coming apart in the 2nd half here sorta blows the whole deal; that, plus Bama at least having a RUNNING game offsets the whole “Defensive advantage” that had UGA AHEAD at the half. With the way Trask, Pitts and the rest have been slinging it around, give US a slew of INTs and a strong running game once we HAVE a lead and WE’D pull out the close ones too—even WITHOUT a defense...woulda won that A&M game, at least.
Yeah, now Georgia is misfiring in EVERY area. They HAD this Tide team, and at THEIR place as well—but even WITH the superior defense they have managed to lose this one. Six minutes left but they are already beaten.
Sigh. With a LITTLE defense and a running game we could manage Championship-level play even now.
So wattaya THINK? Any chance a “shook up, rearranged and effort-redoubled“ Gator-squad return after this “involuntary hiatus” to “run table” and re-emerge a “winner” after all?!!
I hate that I hope—but in spite of myself, a part of me just can’t help it.
But even in what for them is apparently an “off year” defensively, Alabama showed here not only that (like Clemsen) they ARE still one of those very few “elite teams”, but that they DESERVE that continued reputation—AND whatever rewards (rankings, hype, whatever) come with it. We’re not there yet...and by the way, neither is UGA.

Good News is Bama won, I know I know but Georgia lost gets the Gators a better chance (at least until they play Georgia).

Gotta say:
This LOOOOONG “mid-season break”, coming as it did right after the frustrating and DISHEARTENING A&M loss in College Station HAS produced both a pause offering a fortuitous psychological “reset” AND the very chance we might have needed to get healthy, shake up and retool our Defense!
Has that been the case? Will things look different, our team more balanced with respect both to a little crisper reliability in our running game on offense, and of course whether we yet have much of a DEFENSE AT ALL??!
We all wait in tense anticipation to find out...If you’re like me, you may be afraid to hope too much—but at this point can’t HELP yourselves: This season began with such promise and high hopes...Now, it (and us along with it, hanging on by our fingernails) clings to what’s left of the shreds of that “hope”, desperate for a “happy ending”.
I DON’T want or NEED to fatuously outline how our spirits rest and would be rising ON a wild game-by-game win-out streak, were THAT to be “the Story”. This doesn’t so far appear to be a team that ultimately might beat the likes of Alabama and beyond in the SEC Championship Game, etc—even if they made it there as a result.
Then again, things might look quite a bit different, even to ME, were we to pull that off. So at this point, “Let’s just wait and see” seems the best and sanest approach. Just don’t crack your wallet, betting with your heart.

(...meanwhile, the consensus “background chatter” among the “talking heads” on ESPN etc tends to be one WE certainly can relate to so far, sad to say:
That the number one “key to Championships” now (at least as of THIS moment in the seeming “current Covid reality”) is no LONGER having “a top defense” (important as that may still be to the overall strength and promise of a particular program) but to having “a top QB: It seems you must have one in order to contend among “the Elite”!
Our former one-time, LONG time “perennial bench-warming second-stringer”, Kyle Trask, appears to have finally, amazingly to have ascended to something just LIKE that—and as targets we appear to have (especially, but not SOLELY, in TE Kyle Pitts)...
However, without a multi-notch upward improvement in our so far LESS-than-impressive Defense we will almost certainly continue to fall short.
Just stating the obvious, I know—but at THIS point it HAS to be acknowledged.
There is absolutely NO point in deluding ourselves...that won’t change the likely results rest of the way!)

@Escambia94, in particular:

Thanks for putting these up each “Gameday that was”, E-, helping to mark our place in “the season that MIGHT have been” and who we were SUPPOSED to play today...
Though I couldn’t really stomach much of it (and thus DIDN’T watch much of the games that FIRST Saturday after the TAMU loss—AND “Mullens etc-loss” as well, as it turned out) at first, by THIS WEEK I HAVE been watching more of the more “interesting” match-ups, both in and OUT of the SEC, keeping up with my overall impressions of our league AND the REST of the supposedly “top teams”, some of whom (in the case of the Big Ten—notably Ohio State) finally starting their foreshortened seasons only NOW. Not so sure how “fair” weighing the relative talents and strengths of a team that plays a 10-game All-SEC Season against one that has waited until now to begin an 8-game one against the Big Ten is, but here we are. For me, it has frankly been more about what it tells us about where we are and where we’re GOING AS A PROGRAM: I am more and more seeing things in terms of how much BETTER we need to be ALL OVER THE FIELD—What it will take to be a BALANCED team, to find talent and depth ACROSS THE BOARD, and for seasons to come!
Meanwhile, of COURSE I hope to see us turn things around as we resume play THIS season: We DO have the passing game now—and the TALENT elsewhere overall on offense to compete with ANYONE now...but Ooof! that defense so far. Gonna take a HUGE improvement on what we’ve seen so far to even BEGIN to plug the holes over there. I hesitate to make any projections at ALL until we see what they come back with now, after this (possibly fortuitous?) “break in the action” since the A&M debacle. So I won’t.
