Also, they allowed them to go 9/14 on third downs. That needs to change. The Good news is Georgia didn't wake up until the second half, A&M barely beat Vandy, and UK and SC lost.
Yes—and we WERE way short in our secondary. And the D never had a chance to hit ANYBODY, practically since last SEASON. AND one can reasonably expect the greatest such “improvement” to occur between the first and second games (of course, that goes for all these OTHER teams as well—but come to that, I’ll put OUR current coaching staff up against ANY of those others, in the event...)
I still feel maybe both “experts” AND Gator fans in general are overdoing the “optimism” after one game—even BEFORE bringing all questionable defense into it.
In summation: We damn well BETTER clean things up and across-the-board tighten fundamental execution on defense against the Gamecocks next Saturday! I THINK the fact it IS South Carolina is a break in our favor: At least gives us a chance to get the kind of work done we’ll NEED before facing TAMU at their place the following week. Atmittedly, THAT is an optimistic reading of our current situation IN EVERY WAY. It COULD be the start of OUR part in what some project would be this Covid-season’s “SEC Self-Cannibalisation”, too.
But after Spurrier and Meyer, we LOVE our offense at UF—and it sure does look like at least THAT is well into its longed-for renaissance.
Now, if it turns out we can play some consistently competent defense too, well, this could be a big season after all (imaginary “asterisk” or no).
