The Competition (for Attention, anyway)

Alright.
We’ve gotten a glimpse of “the standard” by which we’ll be judged, at any rate.
Clemsen, Notre Dame...Wide open major college offenses clicking on all cylinders...Their defenses looking pretty damn decent—at least against “admittedly lesser competition” (although I THOUGHT USF would acquit itself with a little more pride and overall talent than THEY showed—even WITH the drain of SOME of that “talent” from the State of Fla that the rest of the SEC (and the ACC, to a lesser extent) have managed of late, you’d THINK they’d have grabbed enough of the fertile Florida grounds to make a better showing than YESTERDAY’S against the Irish!).
Now comes OUR chance, along with Alabama, UGA and the REST of the SEC: After yesterday, you gotta believe we will be held to a high standard in the “eye test” come NEXT weekend! Given all the strange and unique circumstances, you just KNOW we’ll have to do a little more than “Just ‘WIN’, baby...’ “—...in the long run, with SEC “playing itself alone” this regular season, “HOW you win” will be an undeniable factor in terms of the “standings” and eventual “playoff choices” as the season progresses. THIS aspect of the proceedings, the reversion to more of the ol’ “beauty pageant”/“popularity contest” to ultimately decide things is the REAL point to all the pre-play discussion: Thank goodness that there IS now still a 4-team PLAYOFF that teams are vying to be named to: in the end, at least it WILL still be “decided on the field”—but WE will have to UNDENIABLY SEIZE OUR PLACE in it to move up and INTO “elite status”, as we have come to expect and focus on. Bama, Bulldogs, LSU will ALL be looking, THEMSELVES “expecting” to hold THEIR places in the pecking order; Clemsen and the Irish have laid THEIR early claims.
Meanwhile, who KNOWS what to make of Miami, whose DEFENSE somewhat surprisingly was their unanticipated “difference maker” in the weekend’s only “Top 20 Match-Up” against Louisville? ...Only that as usual, they aren’t NEAR as good as their trolling fans will be screaming far and wide next few weeks...personally, I will ENJOY their eventual fall, if only for the blessed QUIET it will inevitably bring—along with a return to logic and perspective! Here comes one of those very RARE occasions when I’ll be rooting FOR the ‘Noles: AGAINST Miami...or as my dad used to say, “I hope they BOTH lose!” Lol.
But now word comes of FSU’s latest Head Coach (“/sacrificial lamb”) Norvell has tested positive for Covid and has already been isolated from the team, sat down and for now replaced by his AC on the sidelines...that won’t help them against a streaking-to-start-the-season Hurricanes squad!
Also with a fast start (and perhaps a less illusionary one) is Texas—to a great extent on the arm AND legs of their tough, beefed-up young QB, has managed to raise THEIR profile AND place in the early rankings—and hence in “the talk” here. And of course, Oklahoma is still out there as well. The Big 12 will play their part in this being “a REAL season” after ALL!
But consider what Ohio State will be up against by the time THEY finally begin THEIR campaign: Unless several favorites among those already playing seriously stumble before then, they (the Buckeyes) will have to DESTROY their competition in order to elbow their way into the middle of the “playoff talk”, starting as late as they and Michigan, etc are gonna be starting. But their Conference did this to themselves—not that I especially care, about the “NOT Large Ten” in general OR “The Poison Nuts” in particular!
So all in all, you gotta KNOW how WE will have to “not just win, but WIN WITH AUTHORITY” in order to “Step UP”: Bring our game, image and overall at-large EXPECTATIONS into that ELITE DISCUSSION and STATUS!!! It won’t be enough to just “hold our OWN” this time: It ISN’T a “normal year”. No use pretending differently: We want to see our “Return to Gator Dominance”, we will have to step in and SEIZE IT...One “off week”, one less-than-impressive-showing, whether a loss against a “currently favored SEC power”, or even a barely-pulled-out-LATE WIN against a “lesser (former) rival”, will likely get us left OUT of the late-season PLAYOFF discussion, I’m afraid. Just saying. This is why I have been getting that “sinking feeling” every time I look at E-‘s “before/after”, “a”/“b” lists from back before the season started.
Our only real hope, I think, is that Trask and a by now starting-to-be a POTENT OFFENSE, with a seeming LOT of breakout weapons, begins to “put it all together” a season EARLIER than the “whispering underneath” predicts/promises...word in background is that that offense, especially IF it gets its share of prospective FIVE STAR PROSPECTS ALREADY MORE AND MORE SOLIDIFYING IN THEIR APPARENT INTENTIONS TO JOIN US IN G-VILLE after high school DO JUST THAT: BECOME “Fightin’ Gators” and, with growing depth at Qb under Mullens, begin to finally build an exciting, wide open O-Attack to go with the proven product on the OTHER side of the line-of-scrimmage under Grantham.
There will have to develop a clear, almost ‘assembly line’ beginning to routinely develop in the timing and order of things on and around the Gator offense and way-of-DOING THINGS—on the sidelines AND in the locker room...QBs especially (along with assorted potential playmakers) being “taken under-wing”, mentored and guided by both coaches and players as they settle IN here, become a part of the “Gator Family”...
Clearly, were THAT to noticeably occur, “The HAPPY TIMES” will have returned to our town...with the eventual fading (FINALLY) of the Pandemic and whatever this post-Covid “New World” will look like (masks common on the crowded streets of major cities nationwide for years to come, for one thing, I figure...Here’s a game: What do Y’ALL think will be the features that will persist (or even somewhat surprisingly HANG ON or tend to APPEAR) in the months and even YEARS in AFTERMATH to all we’ve been through here this last year-plus??!)...
ON-THE-FIELD, at least, there’ll be some persistent changes. I just hope it DOESN’T INCLUDE A FEAR OF PHYSICAL CLOSENESS:
I MISS THE RAW EMOTION OF SHARING MOVIES, MUSIC, AND THE LIKE WITH OTHER HUMANS IN A CROWD—INDOOR AND OUTDOOR!!! Trying to watch these “Major Sports in a Bubble” has mostly been a strange chore (I suppose the NHL has done it the best—though it just may be that the scale of their product, locally and regionally and with the loyalty of their fans, has helped...).

Some things will HAVE TO CHANGE—hard to say which, or exactly the way.
Let’s see what happens along THOSE LINES! But be thankful for its final fading, when it DOES come. Personally, I’m in “constantly vigilant” mode, searching for signs of relief!

Question (for @Escambia94, in particular):
How do y’all size up our QB talent and prospective additions there now and in the near future? We got smart AND lucky with Trask’s steady blossoming in the aftermath to Franks’ demise. How is Emory coming along? Will we see a lot more of him this year? Will we keep him? Who’s coming along behind HIM, from what you know and see yourself?
BTW: That’s gonna be an “interesting” game against Arkansas later this season—OK, Mullens showed class not BLOCKING him from going to another SEC team...but he damn well better NOT dazzle the world meanwhile and light us up come the actual GAME...There’s been entirely TOO MUCH of that kind of scenario played out with and by “former Gator QBs” last few years!!!

I think it's going to be the same as it was last year, Trask is the starter and Jones would see some snaps. Also, I would like to see the QB1 show air season 4 soon.

It is still too early to tell if our QB pipeline has been fixed, but it it looks promising.
  • 2018 Emory Jones. 4-star. Heard County HS, Franklin, GA. 2018 stats at Florida: 12/16 (75%) 125 YD 2 TD 181.9 RAT
  • 2019 Jalon Jones. 3-star. Henrico HS, Richmond, VA. Dismissed from team and transferred to Jackson State. 2019 stats at Jackson University (SWAC): 54/111 (48.6%) 882 YD 9 TD 131.3 RAT
  • 2019 Emory Jones. "". 2019 stats at Florida: 25/38 (65.8%) 257 YD 3 TD 150.9 RAT
  • 2020 Anthony Richardson. 4-star. Gainesville HS, Gainesville, FL. No stats. Allegedly Coach Denny Thompson rates Richardson as his #2 QB behind UGA QB Carson Beck and ahead of Alabama QB Mac Jones, and Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims.
  • 2021 Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. 4-star. Grayson HS, Loganville, GA. No stats. Del Rio-Wilson was ranked #10 in the Elite 11 despite winning a few of the competitions in the July 2, 2020 Elite 11 Finals in Nashville, Tennessee. Del Rio-Wilson is considered to be a contender for best of the 2021 recruit class along side uncommitted 5-star Caleb Williams, Oregon commitment Ty Thompson, USC commitment Miller Moss, Michigan commitment JJ McCarthy, Georgia commitment Brock Vandagriff, FSU commitment Luke Altmeyer, Houston commitment Maddox Kopp, LSU commitment Garrett Nussmeier, and Penn State commitment Christian Veilleux.
  • 2021 Jalen Kitna. 3-star. Burleson HS, Burleson, TX. No stats. Kitna de-committed from Boston College for the opportunity to work with Dan Mullen--largely based on the advice of Dak Prescott.
  • 2021 Florida baseball commitment Jay Allen. 3-star. No stats. Jay Allen finished at #20 in the Elite 11, but is currently a Florida baseball commitment considering Miami and others for football.
In addition to looking star rating, one should also look at the number of camps these QBs attend and how they stack up against their peers. Emory Jones stacked up fairly well in his QB camps in 2018 and 2020--as did Feleipe Franks. Franks' passer rating did go up 10-15 points in limited action leading up to his injury at Kentucky, and he was getting rave reviews in camp alongside Emory Jones. Jalon Jones did not have as much hype, and his performance at Jackson State is less than stellar. Anthony Richardson is turning some heads in his camps. He consistently pushes top-rated passer, Carson Beck, and Coach Denny Thompson has nothing but good reviews for him. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson consistently pushes the top 10 recruits in his class at his camps. Jalen Kitna is a good name brand to get as the son of an NFL QB and offensive coordinator. Jay Allen is an interesting story. He was all-in for Florida as a baseball player. He could get drafted into the MLB rather early. His football skills have improved enough where he may consider playing two sports, and Miami would be wise to offer something that Florida is less likely to offer. If Jay Allen is serious about playing two sports, I hope Dan Mullen and Kevin O'Sullivan can work out a deal.

Now throw in Kyle Trask. Trask (https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17849540585089364/) worked out against Miami QB D'Eriq King (https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17906188810447476/). Also in attendance were Baylor commitment Kyron Drones, Maddox Kopp , FAU commitment Shedeur Sanders, Houston commitment Maddox Kpp, and a few others at Select QB Athletics of Houston, Texas. Trask and King battled it out in that camp with many stating that Trask looked better at hitting receivers and King looking a lot more athletic and explosive. Just watching the ball fly from Trask or King to the receiver, I would put my money on Trask by a lot. We do not have live footage of Trask in 2020 to compare to King's game footage against Louisville, but my assessment of King against Louisville is that the Cardinal defense was hot garbage and there is not enough to pick apart King's 18/30 325 YD 3 TD 77.3 RAT performance (http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=29924871). There is not much to learn from King's performance against UAB, since everyone knew that the Hurricanes were holding back the playbook. King was 16/24 144 YD 1 TD 82.5 RAT. The Gator QB room has Kyle Trask, Emory Jones, Anthony Richardson, and Luke Matthews.

Without the COVID-19 pandemic it was assumed that Mullen would tweak the two-quarterback rotation based on the running backs' ability to gain yardage. Last year the QB rotations were awkward because only Lamical Perine was getting yards behind that offensive line. If Dameon Pierce, Malik Davis, Lorenza Lingard, and Nay'Quan Wright can get those rushing yards, we might see more of Trask, not less. What does this mean for Emory Jones? It is hard to say. There are some that think Richardson could challenge Jones as the starter next year, so Jones has to look good in whatever snaps he gets in 2020.

Summary: With limited information, the Gator quarterback room is of higher quality than in the previous decade, and has plenty of depth. The QB pipeline looks healthier than it has since 2005-2006.

Thanks!—for the thorough overview I KNEW we could count on, bra’...
Lots there I was at best “only vaguely aware of”.
Fact is, you managed to succinctly fill in details to a number of things other program- and G-Villegas’s-contacts have dropped pieces of in THEIR various “back channel efforts”. Have to agree about EMORY making the most of his chances (early and often): I really’d like to see what he’s really got, and have a solid chance to “show and STAY”! You get the feeling (so far, mainly in FLASHES) he may sleekly have everything we (and specifically Mullens) need going into NEXT season and true shot at a Natty. (I STILL have no idea of what we—or mostly anyone ELSE, at this point—will have to show the world THIS year! We’ll start to find out a whole lot tomorrow, of course...)
