Before anyone panics, the Florida Gators still have the #5 2021 recruiting class. Yes, they have lost a few recruits, but at this point the only two programs not losing recruits are North Carolina and Tennessee. Follow along on this thread: https://www.gatorenvy.com/threads/florida-gators-2021-recruiting-class.19940/

As of May 7, 2020, here is what the recruiting class looks like:
  1. Ohio State - 17 commits: 3 5-stars, 11 4-stars, 3 3-stars
  2. Tennessee - 18 commits: 2 5-stars, 4 4-stars, 12 3-stars
  3. North Carolina - 14 commits: 0 5-stars, 10 4-stars, 4 4-stars
  4. Clemson - 10 commits: 1 5-star, 9 4-stars, 0 3-stars
  5. Florida - 12 commits: 0 5-stars, 7 4-stars, 5 3-stars
Ohio State is clearly ahead of the rest of the country in recruiting. Tennessee, North Carolina, and Clemson are far behind Ohio State, but are a few points of one another. Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Miami, and USC are all within a few points of one another in the next grouping.

Here are some Gator targets to keep an eye on (with "crystal ball" projection as of May 2020):

  • CB Jason Marshall 6-2 180 Miami Palmetto, Miami, FL, 5-star, #30 national, Florida

“LOSE” recruits; “KEEP” ‘em...
Who can really say how, when, and/or UNDER WHAT CRITERIA???
Hell, I just wanna see what FORM THE 2020 SEASON is gonna take!!!
And to think I used to be a FAN of “dystopian SciFi”...NOT when it overtakes REALITY!!!
I am WELL sick of it now...
We have had a shortage of 5-Star pickups (already the most elusive of targets, in terms of judging their fine points AND in how various head Coaches land and KEEP them in the first place!) ever since the coming and going of Urban Meyer...No matter what, in the long run I think I’ll take Dan MULLENS’ overall approach, packet and skill set over Meyers’ ANYWAY...

I agree that Dan Mullen needs to figure out how to sign 5-star athletes, but he is the right coach to have when the Gators can only sign blue-chip 4-star athletes. UF has the worst problem with getting signees on campus due to the strict academic requirements, and in previous years it had the worst problem with transfers out of the program. Any sports fan who says that the academic requirements between UF and other universities is not paying attention. Since UF is a UFAA school, it does have stringent academic requirements that typically cost the Gators one to three signees each year, and it may influence the type of 5-star and 4-star athletes that UF can recruit.

As for the 2020 season, it is starting to look as if SEC football will look somewhat normal. The debate is whether we will have 90,000 fans in the stands on opening day or if it will build up to that number after the "second wave".

With you all the way here—and let me share a concrete example:
I had a high GPA, and carried several upper-division scholarships in my “Honors Interdiscinary” course-set as an undergrad at UF...
Several years hence (and YEARS ago now, btw), the quality of my transcripts only made a real difference ONCE—but it was a BIGGY:
Apropos of your point about our high status and rating in academic circles and beyond, when I went to interview for acceptance in The Director’s Guild (DGA)—and this was during a “writer’s strike”, where hardly any actual work was going on in Hollywood and elsewhere among union sets, at any rate, and there was MUCH less work going on generally, leaving a lot of “important people” with “too much time on their hands and thus EXTRA time to “do their duty” and “contribute” by volunteering to sit on the “entrance board”, interviewing prospective new candidates for the Guild, and I happened to be slated for MY interview in the MIDDLE of all this!:
I walked into the large, multi-windowed room at the new “DGA Headquarters” bldg, overlooking Sunset Blvd, and found myself facing a MUCH larger group than I had expected—a number of them (JUST as unexpectedly) well known “recognizable figures” in our business/industry...it was a surreal and challenging interview, let me tell you—I was grilled, and clearly I wasn’t SUPPOSED to get the idea anything about me impressed these folks...UNTIL I produced and had passed around copies of my UF-Transcripts— where I’m NOT judged by just the quality of my grades, but the fact that these were from “The University of Florida”, which was noted and (generally, widely, POSITIVELY) commented upon..
The interview went MUCH more smoothly and supportively after that; Clearly I had been recognized and accepted as “another intelligent over-achiever” like they envisioned THEMSELVES! (I remember actually smiling to myself at this thought, a “fortunate one” for me!).
The interview ended on that seemingly more upbeat note a little while later;
I didn’t know, overall couldn’t be sure how “well” or “badly” it had gone—I had no way to guage that—had no one who could tell me or give me any relative info as to how one could...but a few weeks later, I received my letter-of-acceptance.
SO: Yes, I do have that one solid, concrete example and ratification of UF’s specific high regard among those who weigh such things, and GENERAL rating among the higher echelon of top education AND research institutions—and the one (and ONLY) time it counted for ME—that fact turned out to be a CRUCIAL “PLUS”.
As for the season ahead and what shape it will take...a LOT of alternatives were floated in last months, and I was pretty concerned at what we would in fact SEE...Each year I am going slightly antsy by the time we get to late spring, just at having weathered winter WITHOUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL, without our GATORS!!!
This year that trepidation-bordering-on-craziness was absurdly multiplied.
I just wasn’t sure WHAT to expect.
Now, the “reality” that appears to be shaping up does indeed seem to be something at least CLOSE to “traditional, recognizeably normal”—oh, I agree there’ll be some “uncertainties”, especially at the start—and they are probably RIGHT to “build some flexibility and ‘expandibility’ INTO” especially the FAN stadium-experience.
All in all, we ALL NEED IT MORE THAN EVER, am I right?!!
