Kyle Trask 2019 vs Feleipe Franks 2018

Kyle Trask was a slight improvement over Feleipe Franks, even though he actually struggled with zone-read and RPO plays. When he was in "Gator Raid" mode, he was hands-down the better quarterback. Here is a comparison between the two:

Feleipe Franks
2018 Florida SEC SO QB 13 188 322 58.4 2457 7.6 8.3 24 6 143.4
2019 Florida SEC JR QB 4 54 71 76.1 698 9.8 9.3 5 3 173.4

Kyle Trask
2019 Florida SEC JR QB 12 237 354 66.9 2941 8.3 8.8 25 7 156.1

Kyle was 13 points better in passer rating, 8% better in completion rate, 1 touchdown better, and 1 interception worse than Feleipe. Kyle definitely aired it out more than Feleipe, but then again, Dan Mullen did adapt the offense to more of a "Gator Raid" in order to cover up weaknesses with the running game and Kyle's lack of comfort with zone-read and RPO plays.

Feleipe was trending upwards in his QB skills before the injury, but there is not enough data to be conclusive.

Here is a quick look at Feleipe vs Kyle as runners:
Feleipe Franks
2018 Florida SEC SO QB 13 110 350 3.2 7 2 12 6.0 0 112 362 3.2 7

Kyle Trask
2019 Florida SEC JR QB 12 63 8 0.1 4 1 4 4.0 0 64 12 0.2 4

Feleipe almost makes up for his lack of passing yards with rushing yards, but it is clear that despite Kyle's lack of mobility that Kyle brings more production to the Gators than Feleipe. This is not a knock against Feleipe, because the stats are somewhat close, and Feleipe was trending upwards before injury. As a team, the Gators scored 22 points per game in 2018 (#108), but they scored 35 points per game in 2019 (#22).

Trask doesn't have to be running QB especially since Mullen has Jones, like when he had Leak and Tebow in 2006. Hope the running gets going, granted back in 2006 the running game was mostly Tebow and Harvin.

Agreed. There is a perception that Mullen's offense only works with dual-threat QBs, but he has shown time and time again going back to his time as an OC under Meyer at Bowling Green that he has constantly modified his offense around the QB [ref: https://www.gatorenvy.com/threads/dan-mullens-history-with-developing-quarterbacks.19605/]. Chris Leak, Tyler Russell, and Kyle Trask were all pocket passers who flourished under Dan Mullen's tutelage, and none of them had more than 150 yards rushing in a career (as of January 2020 Trask has 68 yards rushing). Dak Prescott and Feleipe Franks have comparable numbers as pocket passers who happen to be dual threat QBs. Joshua Harris, Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Chris Relf, and Nick Fitzgerald were true dual-threat QBs, but Alex Smith and Tim Tebow both were excellent in the pocket and both had good passing games even when opponents stuffed the QB run (with the notable exception of Tebow's loss to 2009 Alabama).
  • Joshua Harris was the first QB to popularize the Urban Meyer spread option offense. He was a 2-star QB out of Westerville, Ohio, but Urban Meyer and Dan Mullen did not have many options at Bowling Green. Harris totaled 7,260 passing yards, 56 TDs, 1,857 rushing yards, and 41 rushing TDs between 2001 and 2003 and finished with a passer rating of 137.5 (not counting his freshman year). Harris played in the 2003 Senior Bowl and was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Harris was inducted into the Bowling Green Hall of Fame in 2016.
  • Alex Smith was recruited to Utah out of La Mesa, CA and was also a 2-star QB. Alex totaled 5,233 passing yards, 47 TDs, 1,702 rushing yards, and 15 rushing TDs between 2002 and 2005 and a final passer rating of 164.4. He was the #1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
  • Chris Leak spent half his college career under Mullen's tutelage, after being coached by Ed Zaunbrecher and Larry Fedora under very different offenses. Mullen modified the spread option offense to suit Leak's passing skills. Chris totaled 11,213 passing yards, 88 TDs, 137 entire rushing yards, and 13 rushing TDs with a final passer rating of 140.1. Chris led the Gators to a national championship in 2006 by completing 25 passes in 36 attempts for 213 yards and a TD.
  • Tim Tebow shattered just about every record known to man while he was under Mullen's tutelage between 2006 and 2008. Tebow passed for 9,286 yards, 88 TDs, 2,947 rushing yards, and 57 rushing TDs between 2006 and 2009 and a final passer rating of 170.8. Tim won the Heisman Trophy in 2007, a national championship in 2008, the Davey O'Brien Award, the Maxwell Award, and was #1 or #2 in passing efficiency from 2007 to 2009.
  • Chris Relf was Mullen's first QB at MSU, and was a dual threat with 3,297 yards passing, 28 TDs, 18 INTs, 1,578 yards rushing, and 9 rushing TDs from 2009 to 2011 and a final passer rating of 130.5 (140 not counting his freshman year and an injury-laden senior season). He is ranked among the top 10 QBs in school history, and was MVP in back-to-back bowl games.
  • Tyler Russell was a drop-back passer who shared time with Relf and Prescott between 2010 and 2013. His 5,441 passing yards ranks him #4 in school history, and his 42 TDs rack him #2. He finished with a final passer rating of 137.3 Russell was on the Heisman watch a couple times in his career.
  • Dak Prescott broke most of Russell's records and ranks atop most of the school's records after passing for 9,327 yards, 70 TDs, 2,521 rushing yards, and 41 rushing TDs with a final passer rating of 146.0 (averaged 151.4 his final 2 years). Between 2012 and 2015, Dak led the Bulldogs to a #1 ranking and was on the Heisman and Davey O'Brien watch lists.
  • Nick Fitzgerald has 6,207 yards, 55 TDs, 3,607 rushing yards, and 46 rushing TDs between 2015 and 2018. His final passer rating was 122.5
  • Feleipe Franks was thrust into action his redshirt freshman year in one of Florida's worst seasons. Dan Mullen and Brian Johnson completely revamped Feleipe and improved his passer rating from 113.3 to 143.3. Note that Feleipe was the first Gator QB to pass for 2,000 yards and maintain a passer rating over 140 since Tim Tebow. In his injury-shorted season of 2019 he was the first Gator QB to have a passer rating over 170 since Tim Tebow.
  • Kyle Trask took over at QB after Franks was injured in game 4 of 2019. Kyle was the first Gator QB to pass for 2,000 yards and maintain a passer rating over 150 since Tim Tebow, and passed for over 300 yards in a game the most since Tim Tebow.
