After Vanderbilt's strong showing against Arkansas, the Gator Nation has reason to worry about the normally hapless Commodores. We normally use the phrase "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" when describing the Vanderbilt football team, but if they want to pull an upset this is the year to do it.

In the statistical comparison, both teams just plain suck. Really. The only difference is that Vandy has nothing to lose and could turn that disappointment in not beating Arkansas into a rally cry to gain respect by beating the downtrodden Florida Gators.

Total yards Pass yds Rush yds Points
Florida 337.8 94th 201.3 94th 151.4 66th 26 78th
Vanderbilt 320.3 106th 167.9 106th 167.6 50th 25.3 62nd

Here is how I know Vanderbilt will cause us trouble:

- They have nothing to lose, so they try crazy ideas. Look for Vanderbilt offensive tackle Andrew Bridges at 6-6, 270 to line up at tight end when they need short yardage blocking or a big guy to stand over our little guys and get short yardage dump offs. He also blocks down field very well. As a tight end, he could wreak havoc on our defensive front in short yardage situations. In goal line situations, they line up 6-6 300 pound lineman Ryan Seymour with him for a jumbo, twin tight end set. In that goal line stand, they have a size and alignment advantage. They have run against better run defenses using gimmicks like this. They only thing that stops them from finishing off Georgia and Standards is poor 3rd and long conversion (no fast receivers), and a lower tier kicker.

-They have overcome adversity caused by injuries and inadequate personnel by playing just about everybody on the roster to find the over achievers. When one 'Dore player under performs, they send in the backup and give him a shot on the field to take the starting position. It has been working. Take away the first half of Florida-Alabama and Vanderbilt amassed more offense against Alabama and had a better defense! Vanderbilt played Georgia better than we did! They have over achievers. Do not under estimate Vanderbilt this year.

Yeah, this could be the year for Vandy. If they can keep it going into the 4th quarter, they could be a problem.

I can't believe I just typed that. But, they usually hang around for 3 quarters and after last weeks close one, they will be feeling it this week. As said before, they have nothing to lose, but then again, they never do. Sad to say, Florida has nothing to lose. Maybe we can steal one from Vandy. Nothing is for sure this year.

didnt feel good about auburn or georgia and dont feel good about this one. Its ashame that we have become this that a win against vandy would be huge :( guess this year any win is big for us.

I'm in the same place, aweb. If ever there were a year when they could get us in the Swamp, this is it. As you say, it is sad to say it, but I am so completely devoid of hope or optimism for this team, or rather "the collection of individuals we are forced to field as The Fightin' Gators at this point in this dismal season", that I don't feel any confidence at all that we will beat even VANDY. At HOME, fer cryin' out loud, where they haven't beaten us since 1948!...and yeah, it WILL be a "Big Win" if we do, absurdly enough--all the more so because it would put us on track to be bowl eligible with a win over Furman, allowing us to extend our season another 5 weeks thru' New Year's Day, and all the practical advantages, obvious and subtle that go with that. Sure, this is a better-than-your-average-every-year-Vanderbilt team this year, but they are STILL SEC lower-tier...just 2 years ago it was US and Alabama they were calling "The Game of the Decade". Sad sad sad.

Meanwhile, for MOST people here at GE, both us ignorant fools who "drank the coolaid" and continue to believe in Coach Boom, his attitude and his plan, AND the "loyal opposition" who hope things turn out but have various gnawing concerns, there's a blog-entry y'all should read (to be honest, I am already so tired of the "knee-jerk-crowd" who only want to "throw the bums out" that I am inclined to end all discussion with them: Personally, I feel that there are already plenty of yammering-idiocy-blogs where they can find their-kind-of-people, and I suggest they go and join them there).
Anyway, for the true (and overwhelming) majority of the good folks here at GE, I recommend the column "Staying the Course..." at Gatorzone.com, Fri. 11/04. It'll reset the "Big Picture", maybe put you at ease and help to remind you in this tense and dismal period just how and why many of us came to see this hire as an exciting, inspired one by Foley in the first place. It certainly well-argues the reasons why it is worth giving Muschamp some time to see what emerges from the ruins of a mess that he didn't make, but has had to dismantle, clean out and begin to rebuild out of.

I am in Baton Rouge (dressed head to toe in Gator orange and blue) now for an event with my kids. No SEC fan outside of Gainesville is panicking or worrying about the Gators losing.

My game day predictions:

- Demps, Rainey, and/ or Gillislee get our running game moving for 200 yards +
- Brantley throws for over 250 and a couple TDs
- The defense comes alive-- 2+ sacks, 5+ TFL, 1 INT-TD
- Final score, 28-17

Yeah, this turned out to be a pretty fair fore-sight of what SHOULD have been the final score out there today--in fact, had E- taken into account the inevitable Gator "big-time-screw-ups-at-crucial-moments" factor, therefore subtracting one TD for us and adding a score to THEIR side, he hits it practically dead on. Add in the Brantley injury in the 2nd half and its effect on Weis' game plan, and the already "half-of-'em-accurate" stats become "all-of-'em-right-on-the-nose"!
We STILL left significant "points-on-the-field" out there in the first half, and it nearly cost us badly in the 2nd. We STILL had our share of bone-headed breakdowns at crucial moments in the game, and THAT cost us too, gave them hope, territory and kept them in the game on several occasions. We STILL watched lackadaisical play in both our WRs on offense and our coverage guys on defense, watched portions of that defense take whole series off as the game went on, first in lazy frustration at being out played by Rogers and HIS receivers, then in lazy arrogance once they figured OUR offense had already won it for them.
Here's the "bottom line", Swamp: even in victory, this is a Gator team that is no fun to watch--in fact, is infuriating in its attitude, its lack of drive, honor, self-pride and self-discipline. The fact that they are also too small and not even particularly talented even for their size as it has turned out (Meyer, whether because of laziness himself and/or an over-stressed, distracted and health-afflicted attention to other , more personal problems, went by all the "experts" ideas of who was "talented" his last couple of drafts, rather than go out and find out who really "had the goods", as he--or more likely his old staff--once did), has left us drowning in guys who were at best over-rated under-achievers, who were doomed to injury and failure in the SEC to BEGIN with, and their one main shared trait, "lack of Character", doomed our whole program the last 2 years...and Meyer KNEW it, at least on some level...That's why he wanted out after '09, then made good for real when 2010 confirmed his fears. I'd have had SOME respect if he'd come right out and copped to it last year at his resignation news conference, but as it is, I have no further use for the guy: I give him props for the '06 Championship (with Zook's players) and for '08 (with Tebow and that class he and his staff brought in the first 2 years they were here). so overall, in my view, it's a "wash".
Now we're left "in the red", our Head Coach and his staff having to slowly, painfully navigate one of the toughest schedules in the country with a bunch of losers that need to be cleared away ASAP and new guys, their KIND of guys, found and brought in quickly in almost unprecedented numbers this recruiting cycle and next (especially this coming one--fortunately, there is every sign that they are on the way of accomplishing just that: an amazing class may very well be in the offing).
There is so much work to be done, and every sign that this staff is HARD at work all OVER the place to make it happen, with only their plans' execution and eventual evidence of the results to show that they are on the right road they themselves believe in, that I have little patience with people who are so quick and ready to fry them now, before ANY of it can be fully begun, let alone demonstrated...and I sure don't care to see it repeated over and over ad infinitum here at the Envy--we're BETTER than that here! If that IS their opinion, fine, state it once or twice, but once you know that people have read/heard your point, and generally don't buy into it, LEAVE IT ALONE. That sort-of-thing is gathering momentum all over the other Gator-sites. I say, "You're welcome to your opinion, and you're welcome to continue INTELLIGENT discussion with us here at Gator Envy, but your obsessive one-note/one-opinion yammering is NOT welcome here!" There are plenty of sites for that sh*t: take it over to "Swamp Things" and "Gator Bytes" and the like. What do YOU think, SP? Do you agree? (I know aweb does, and at least a FEW others, JUST as strongly as I do).

When I started the poll, I assumed it would be a close game. By the end of the week my confidence grew. Perhaps I got too confident, but I do believe the first half was very good considering where we are now. We will need to repeat that 1st half for both halves against USC to get the upset. It can be done, but it would be a first this season if we played well all 60 minutes without injuries, penalties, etc.

Again, "...what E just said", but as you say, that will be difficult for this team--to the point where I just don't see it happening. Even if we can again keep the penalties to a minimum, the injuries continue to pile up (JB IV may well have hurt his throwing arm/elbow, too), and that only deepens depth issues and reinforces our reliance on too many no-heart/no-character/no-self-discipline-type guys. I'd love to see us surprise at least ONE of our two remaining regular-season BCS-opponents (especially if we could manage it in a few weeks against Half-Assed Yew in our usual final game on the schedule--the way this season has turned out, at this point we could hope for nothing better), but in realistically practical terms, a win against Furman alone (and neither we nor our team dare take ANYTHING as a "given", but rather must be prepared and determined to BEAT them soundly and fairly, or find ourselves facing another painful defeat) accomplishes the one absolutely necessary goal left to us this year: ie. To qualify for and ultimately accept a bid to a New Year's Day bowl game.
