Noah arrested in Gainesville on pot possession

Noah arrested for possession
Bull faces alcohol, drug-possession charges

By K.C. Johnson | Tribune reporter
May 26, 2008

Bulls center Joakim Noah was arrested in Gainesville, Fla., early Sunday on allegations of possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and an open-container violation, police said.

Summer Hallett, public information officer for the Gainesville Police Department, confirmed that Gainesville police stopped Noah, 23, about 1:50 a.m. Sunday for carrying a clear plastic cup with an "iced, amber-colored beverage" inside.

Hallett said Noah put down the liquid when confronted by police, who were enforcing the city's law prohibiting drinking from open containers on public sidewalks.

Hallett said subsequent inspection revealed Noah's drink to be alcoholic, at which point officers arrested Noah and took him to the department's downtown annex. A source said Noah was drinking cognac.

Once there, Hallett said, officers discovered a cannabis cigarette inside a cigarette package that Noah had in his pants pocket. Noah was issued a notice to appear in court for the two misdemeanors.

Hallett said Noah was cooperative with police and "bonded himself out" by being fingerprinted and signing a notice to appear before a judge at his court date.

The misdemeanor marijuana charge carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $500 fine.

Hallett said Noah has a court date in June.

An attempt to reach Noah wasn't successful.

A team spokesman said general manager John Paxson is aware of the incident but would reserve comment until more information has been gathered.

The spokesman added that Paxson spoke to Noah on Sunday and expressed his disappointment to Noah for his actions.

The incident was first reported by the Gainesville Sun newspaper.

A spokesman for the NBA league office said officials are monitoring the situation.

According to the collective bargaining agreement, any player convicted of marijuana possession is required to enter a league program.

A third violation would bring a five-game suspension.

Noah averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds during his rookie season after the Bulls drafted him ninth overall out of Florida last June.

He needs to stop hanging out with Lance Briggs, Josh Howard, Channing Crowder, or whoever he's hanging out with, stop smoking that grass, and work on his game.

Gatorsports.com ran an article today stating that Yannick Noah (Joakim's dad) doesn't see the big deal made over his son getting busted for an open container of booze in public and being discovered with a joint in his pants pocket - it IS a big deal because the NBA doesn't condone that kind of player behavior and Joakim made himself look foolish. Add to that another misdemeanor of having a suspended driver's license that was also mentioned today and he's looking at ponying up some fines. If Noah cares about his future in the pros, he needs to get his ducks in a row.

I can understand having an open container outside a club/bar in downtown Gainesville. I mean almost anyone who has ever gone out in G-Ville has done it at some point. So that's probably what Yannick was talking about not being a big deal.

The weed on the other hand is a big deal. Noah is an NBA player. He has responsibilities. I can't believe he is that stupid to have weed out in the public. Just because he won 2 titles in G-Ville doesn't make him immune to the laws.

yeah but he wasn't flaunting the weed around. He had a weed cigarette hidden in a pack. I'm pretty sure if you stop every NBA player while theyr'e out on the town, about 75% of them will have weed. It's just the way things are nowadays.

Agreed. College is for kids; the NBA is a league for grown men. Joakim Noah needs to start growing up.

NBA = Weed!
There are SO MANY idiots in the NBA that the entire NBA gets a black eye, including good guys like Duncan etc.
NBA & professional athletics in general are a mess!

what do you expect out of a person like him? born and raise in the ghettos of new york. obviously he grew up around that stuff, at least he isn't doing crack or anything big a deal. I don't see why marijuana is bad it comes out of the ground and it doesn't make noah and others a bad person. noah may be a bit big mouthed and have heart for the game, so a little weed shouldn't hurt his rep imo.

I don't know about Noah being from the "ghettos" of New York. His family was pretty wealthy.

I think Noah is a good kid and this will just be rude awakening. I think this will be the last time he does something stupid like this.

Another thing he needs to realize is that he's living a "fishbowl" life since he's famous, and the media will pick up on his least little indiscretion. If he wants to avoid the negative press he needs to watch himself in public.

Let's get to the basics:
1) Noah got caught with weed, nobody is surprised because:
A) Almost everyone in the NBA smokes weed and Joakim Noah is in the NBA
B) He does stuff like [ame="http://youtube.com/watch?v=bQ3y5hTHuP4&feature=related"]this[/ame]
C) His dad recreated himself as a reggae singer
D) Have you ever looked at him?
2) Some people think it makes him immature, some don't. Personally, I don't care beacues tons of men & women (notice I didn't say boys and girls) smoke. I mean, my man E and Vince from Entourage hit the bong in the first episode.
3) The Bulls will get rid of him because John Paxton is a terrible GM who built his whole team on young players with no veteren leadership then expected them to be a premier team.
4) The Bulls need Noah because:
A) Every team needs a chemistry guy, and Joakim is that man. Sure, he'll never be a double-double guy and he had a run-in with his coach, but the guy loves to have fun and would make going to practice fun.
B) Somebody needs to polish Michael Beasley's shoes.
