What Brent Pease brings to the Gators

Brent Pease's biggest attribute for getting the job at Florida was probably Boise State's remarkable success where he has served on the offensive coaching staff for the last six years. Second to his results is that Pease has coached in a variety of conferences throughout college football.

Pease served as the running backs and wide receivers coach from 1991-1998 at Montana, and then was the school's offensive coordinator from 1996-98. He took the offensive coordinator's/quarterback's job at Northern Arizona from 1999-2000 and then moved to Kentucy from 2001-02 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He then went to Baylor from 2003-2005 as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach before arriving at Boise State as the wide receivers coach in 2006, moving to assistant head coach/wide receivers coach in from 2007-2010 and then in 2011 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In announcing the hire Wednesday, Muschamp again reiterated that they don't want to adjust the scheme to fit Pease but rather they want Pease to "tweak" what is already in place.

"We have an outstanding offensive staff, it was really about bringing a guy who was going to be a good fit for the room, bring some new ideas, bring some new energy to what we're trying to do, but understand we're not changing philosophically," Muschamp said.

As John Brantley, Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey have played their final games at Florida, offensively the Gators do not have an identity and it will be up to Pease to create one.

“That’s another thing I really like about Brent,” Muschamp explained. “He’s been to some different places and he’s done some different things. He’s been a lot of different places and has been exposed to a lot of different stuff and different schemes. All you do in this profession is you continue to learn and grow and then you’ve got to take your personnel and fit your scheme to your personnel."

Pease has been described as an unpredictable playcaller, and Muschamp cited his experience at Kentucky (having called plays in The Swap) as another big factor, saying he knows how to call plays against SEC defenses.

Yet another factor is that Pease was an NFL quarterback himself (as a backup to Warren Moon on the Oilers) and has served as the quarterbacks coach in most places he's been. That will be key as Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett vie for the job as sophomores.

Pease is known for challenging players to become better and doesn't mind a confrontation with a player when needed. Charlie Weis said earlier this season that he will never really criticize a quarterback in the flow of the game, wanting them to stay confident. Weis, in general, had a teddy bear feel to him.

Muschamp also highlighted Pease' ability as a recruiter, "He does a great job making relationships with people and that’s all recruiting is. He does a good job at evaluating. Boise State signed two wideouts this last year that we’re selected in the first three rounds."

Pease will focus on quarterbacks in recruiting, though Muschamp indicated that will be down the road as they feel they are set with either Driskel or Brissett.

Muschamp wouldn't say if Pease interviewed with Nick Saban and Alabama, but it's got to feel good knowing that the Gators got a coordinator which was in consideration to call plays for the National Championship winning team.
