Reports: Florida to suspend QB Will Grier for using performance enhancing drugs

News Bot

Well here is a curveball for the undefeated Florida Gators. Quarterback Will Grier will reportedly be suspended by the program for the rest of the season for a violation of NCAA rules. Mike Huguenin of GridironNow.com was first to report the news of the suspension, via Twitter. GatorBait.com had a second report with the same […]

As they announced it, I thought it was gonna be for this game--bad enough. But for rest of year? Disaster. Looks like this has been brewing since start of year, too...NOW they're talking bout possibility that if team KNEW this process was ongoing, in addition to question of choosing to start him anyway, possible consideration of REVOKING all our victories thus far for his participation with that knowledge. Sounds far-fetched, but would be FAR ftom first time UF gets UBER-shafted by NCAA.
Yikes, this just gets worse and worse. Our "magic season" gets poisoned. Lost my cynical "edge", I guess: Never occurred to me that the whole thing could go so completely wrong so fast. Shoulda known, I guess.

Just when you think going into LSU was bad enough, they got to deal with this crap. Good thing Harris has starting experience and a bye week before Georgia. Not to mention, the Gators will go into 2016 a QB short for a half a year (best case scenario). I see the only that hasn't committed so far is Xavier Gaines from Frostproof. I hate to said that Coach Mac needs to get him but have another QB on scholarship would help. Sorry got a little ahead of myself.

My guess is that the Gators will be able to appeal the 365-day suspension down to the rest of the year, since it was an over-the-counter substance. Now the pressure is on Treon Harris to lay off the marijuana, and for Josh Grady to not pick up heroin, LSD, roofies, or, I don't know, anything else stupid.

Ha! The reason Ligandrol is sold over the counter is for male erection dysfunction.

No, this has to be addressed. I was already thinking about it too--but don't underestimate Coach Mac & Co.'s talent and vigilance along those lines. May be cold, but gotta figure the sudden apparent "reopening" room at the QB position, after it seemed a star had been born and in place there, may well give even more room for 'em to flip someone committed elsewhere. Also, forgettin' his name and pedigree at the moment, but there's a son of an NFL QB who is good and still has us on his "list". Gotta put Will Grier outta our minds, off the page rest of this year, anyway. As E- says, BEST case scenario has him coming back start of NEXT season--and even that may be over-optimistic. We're Florida, that's the NCAA, and we're counting on them bending back on their explicit RULES? For US? Not too likely, no matter the argument, unless there is some leverage that can be brought to bear.

Whose the son of the NFL QB? There's Culpepper's kid but he was a DL and there's Jacob Eason whose father is Tony but not that Tony though his dad did play college ball at Notre Dame.

Here are the QB offers. Kyle Trask is the most solid commit (if there is such a thing).

No, it's only the OTHER Florida school that gets to bend the rules:

Naw, you're right: It was Culpepper's kid I was thinking of (I was mind-fried yesterday, with this business mainly but buncha things too). He's a Syracuse commit now? He was a lifelong Gator fan, son of a Gator great, supposedly DREAMT of comimg to UF, so if he goes to play in the Carrier Dome it's 'cause Mac didn't/isn't going after him, had/has other guys in mind. Maybe Rex figured Will was gonna be THE guy here for a few years, too. Anyway, situation has changed from both their points of view, so maybe that changed too. Gotta believe our Coach, a QB-building specialist among his reputed strong points, had/has plans ftom the very start to bring in exactly the kind of guys he is looking for THROUGHOUT the roster, especially on offense and especially ESPECIALLY at QB. Figure he was looking to bring in another QB that fits his style (as Will Grier DOES, btw--and Treon Harris does NOT), bring him along slowly to be ready later...Now that all becomes more urgent, the timetable moved up. More I think about it, deeper I feel it that "the bubble has burst": Whatever secret hopes and prospects we might have begun to dream on for this season, for this team in its present course and composition, I am having to face the growing certainty that " small vain hope" has been rendered null and void. I fear we're more or less back to depending on our defence for whatever wins are ahead. Sigh. At least this coach will make sure they play hard, both sides of the ball, and keep things interesting rest of the way. Even better, we've gotten a glimpse of how things are likely to BE, how we'll do on a regular basis in seasons ahead. Only it 'll come as less and less of a surprise to ANYONE, as things get "up to speed".

I'm sure Coach Mac will look at Rex though he suffered a injury that kept him from playing this season. I'm sure it might be depended on what happens with Grier next season though not sure if coach Mac can wait that long. Of all the top 50 quarterbacks there, only Xavier Gaines is available. I know he's a dual threat and not a pocket passer but can Coach Mac be picky? Could they convince Rex coming here? Possible. I'm guessing he wanted to either play early or make his own legacy or both. Plus Syracuse aren't they on fourth QB now? The ACL Tear scares me and I'm sure it scares Coach Mac plus the last QB to have Gator bloodlines didn't panned out for the Gators.

Great post, lots of info and insight (I either forgot or missed entirely Rex's ACL tear, etc--been somwwhat distracted by OUR roller coaster ride this season). Nothing to add here, really: You make all the important points.

I know, we know, you're dead right.
That's how it really is in the NCAA.
Not only do the politics mean that the other Florida schools get MAD breaks, while they throw the book at us if/when ANY opportunity arises, but the underlying messages are essentially outrageous in any other context...Here, for example: Rape is "just boys being boys", you find a way to let their program finesse the whole deal...but a Gator star foolishly takes some over-the-counter stuff with an obscure " banned ingredient", you jump all OVER that one, find and enforce to its fullest a rule that's there not to teach or protect, but enforced in this way will ruin the young man's career, if possible--and not incidentally, hopefully choke off any premature "Return Of The Gator". A year's worth of games, no consideration of intent or circumstances or lack of meaningful advantage gained. I could maybe understand part of a season, several games, to make a strict point...but this? Unreal, unfair, un-AMERICAN, but he's not, we're not gonna get any slack cut by the NCAA. Not us.
