Muschamp: "John's going to be able to throw the football"

Gator Fan
Will Muschamp addressed the media Monday and named the weekly award winners for Saturday's win over Kentucky. He also hinted/admitted that the Gators will have to throw the ball down the field to beat Alabama Saturday.

On the need throw the ball more against the Alabama defense:

"John's [Brantley] going to be able to throw the ball [against Alabama]," Muschamp said.

"John's outstanding. He's played very well for us. What I see in practice is a very productive passing attack."

"I think you have to be multiple [passing and running] when you play these guys. You can't be one dimensional but a lot of our offense so far has been attributed to the fact that three of them have been in hand by half time."

"So we ran the ball in order to end the game. As opposed to what a lot of schools do they go out and throw the ball 30 times and say 'Hey we averaged 300 yards passing a game' well that's great but that's not really what you are trying to do to win football games."

On Nick Saban's influence:

Muschamp admitted that "he would not be standing here today" if it wasn't the opportunity Saban gave him at LSU in 2011 as the linebackers coach and then eventually the defensive coordinator until 2004 when both coaches moved to the Miami Dolphins.

Muschamp says that Saban never asked him to do anything he wouldn't do himself as a head coach. He says that he respects Saban's work ethic.

He says what he took away from coaching under Saban was "total program management" as far as the total build of the program in terms of recruiting and offensive and defensive philosophy.

On Alabama's defense, "As much as anything they are in the fifth year of their system. The players understand what's being asked as far as the adjustments. The new things that pop up into a game, they're able to adjust very quickly. They have good players. They have been able to recruit the kind of player they want. They're very talented and they are tied together from the front end to the back end and they have experienced guys who have played in big games."

-On stopping Alabama's run game "We just need to tackle better, make open-field tackles"

On stopping Alabama running back Trent Richardson specifically CWM says the Gators need to gang-tackle and "bring their feet" when tackling, something he says the team has not done enough of this season.

-Muschamp said he has been impressed with how well Demps and Rainey have held up physically based on the number of snaps each have taken thus far. Muschamp said that there's little or no contact during practice during the week for either Demps and Rainey and the two players are in "no contact" jerseys during the week at practice.

Yeah. All good and true points--but I already knew YOU understood, Coach, and want to see your players rise to the occasion. Question is, can they do it IN A GAME (and against Alabama, to boot)?
Hearing that Brantley's throwing well in practice would be better news if we hadn't heard this (and seen it ourselves, back in the days of open practices) so many times before. So far, it has never made a difference in a game when it counted.
At least we WON'T see a picture like we did back in '79 after the game against the Tide (the year Alabama eventually won a then-mythical National Championship and WE went 0-10-1): there was Charlie Pell facing Bear Bryant on the front of the Sports-section with his head bowed and resting on his mentor's shoulder, the taller and older man embracing and patting Charlie on the back in consolation after thrashing him and us something like 39-0--that score on the old electronic scoreboard looming over them.
Don't see that kind of score--and don't see that picture being possible no matter WHAT the outcome!
