All three of Florida’s seniors were invited to the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational, a tournament for seniors bound for the NBA draft.
But while center Vernon Macklin and power forward Alex Tyus will play in front of NBA scouts this week, small forward Chandler Parsons has elected to decline his invitation.
Parsons’ father, Gary Parsons, said that his son was advised not to attend the event.
“Some agents told us that it may be a good idea for him to sit it out,” Gary Parsons said. “Coach (Billy) Donovan also advised us not to go. It’s more for late second picks or players looking to improve their draft stock.”
The 6-foot-10 Parsons earned SEC player of the year honors, averaging 11.3 points per game, while finishing third in the league in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and fifth in assists (3.8 apg).
For Macklin, the Portsmouth Event will serve as a homecoming. Macklin was born and raised in Portsmouth, Va., and often refers to the area code (“The 757″) in his tweets. The 6-10 Macklin scored a career-high 25 points in his final collegiate game, a 74-71 overtime loss to Butler.
Tyus was invited to event last Friday after averaging 13.7 points and 13.3 rebounds in his final three NCAA Tournament games.
The Portsmouth Tournament will begin Wednesday night with games through Saturday. For more information, visit http://www.portsmouthinvitational.com/
