Gloomy forecast for Gators

News Bot

News Bot
Those preseason magazines that help bridge the gap between the summer and the start of the college football season probably are not going to be very kind to Jim McElwain and the Gators.

The magazines will be coming out soon and the predictions for Florida likely are going to be bad, maybe even dire.

There will be some glowing comments about Vernon Hargreaves III and the defense, of course. But the previews of the Florida offense are going to be dark and depressing if you’re a Gator. The sad thing is the offense could actually be worse than it was last season, even though an offensive-minded coach is now calling the shots. And that’s not a bold prediction by any stretch.

The offensive line is a mess. No experience. No depth. And probably no chance of holding up against a good SEC defensive front.

Quarterback is a huge question mark. There’s very little depth at tailback. And you can count the number of proven playmakers on one finger (Demarcus Robinson).

The defense will be strong enough to keep the Gators in every game, but will the offense be able to score enough points to win at least half of those game to make the Gators bowl eligible? Everyone is going to be presenting that question in preseason print.

Usually, you can go down the Florida schedule and pick out four or five sure victories. You can’t do it with this one. There’s New Mexico State and Florida Atlantic — and that’s about it.

There are road games at Kentucky, Missouri, LSU and South Carolina. There are back-to-back tough home games early in the season against Tennessee and Ole Miss. Then there’s Florida State sitting there at the end.

Given the schedule, along with an overmatched offensive line that could render the offense inept, it’s tough to predict six wins for this UF team. In the preseason magazines, we’re probably going to see the Gators picked fourth or fifth, heck, maybe even sixth, in the Eastern Division.

So, if you’re looking forward to those magazines hitting the newsstands here soon, don’t. What’s inside might ruin your summer.
