Just a couple of weeks before the start of spring practice, Will Muschamp has abruptly made a change to his coaching staff. In a press release, Muschamp announced that Frank Verducci is out as Florida’s offensive line coach, replaced by Tim Davis. Muschamp and Davis, who spent the 2011 season in the same position at Utah, were…

Though it hasn't been widely reported this way, and, similar to how "releases" of a number of (to likewise put it "nicely") under-achieving and/or unhappy players were handled over the course of his first year here, while most widely-published versions have him "moving on" or "leaving to go in a different direction", Coach Muschamp in fact FIRED Verduci on Sunday, then quickly hired Tim to replace him on Monday. Though the ostensible reason was as a result of Verduci's having quietly interviewed for a parallel job with the Kansas City Chiefs (Chomp demands honor and loyalty among his coaches every bit as much as his players--and after the way some other Gator Coaches had covertly interviewed elsewhere, then left with little or no warning, he was not about to wait for another--and made that clear to all before this), the fact is that it gave him an opportunity to "right another wrong" (the BIG one being Weis, but not the only one), correct a possible error he made in hiring Verduci when he took over at UF, rather than bringing in the guy he came to realize he REALLY wanted and needed--and who WANTED the job: Tim Davis had called his old friend and colleague Will Muschamp when word came that he was offered the Gator Head Coaching job last year, and offered his services; when the job turned out not to be open (Weis wanted Verduci, so there'd been a decision to go with him by then), Davis asked Coach to keep him in mind for the future. Like a lot of other things happening with the Gators going into 2012, "the future" turned out to be "now".
It looks like another really good fit, a problem getting turned into a solution in short order, and leaving us all the stronger for it. There's a real chemistry growing among this staff, to go with the energy and focus that was already there: from the moment Coach Boom got here you could feel the change from what HAD been here--among the players, and now the coaches too. It's been rising ever since, and now you can see the pieces falling into place.
