Are the Gators a Top 10 team in all of college football?

The collective media thinks they are just a bit outside, placing Florida at No. 11 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The Gators move up three spots from No. 14 a week ago.

In the USA TODAY Coaches' Poll, a.k.a the sports information directors Top 25, the Gators come in at No. 12. As Florida moves closer to its pivotal showdown against LSU in two weeks, it's interesting to think of the Gators as a BCS team having just participated in the Gator Bowl (all due respect to the fine folks who put that on in Jacksonville) last January.

LSU drops from No. 2 to No. 3 in both polls, trading spots with Oregon. LSU squeaked by an unranked 1-2 Auburn team on Saturday, 12-10.

Some of our fellow Gators in the local Alumni Group were really hoping for a #10-placement at LEAST, craving the media recognition that a "Top Ten ranking" would likely bring, but I wasn't among them. The way I see it, we're already well within striking distance of the top as the season goes on, if/when we really do get on a run and manage a winning-record for the month of October...For now, I'd just as soon that, as much as possible, we were able to continue "flying under the radar" going into the first of what will in truth be a sequence of tougher and tougher match-ups during that time. LSU will just be the first (and not even the hardest) of these, and enormous credit and attention will accrue with victories over them, and EACH of the succeeding opponents, if we can mange it. I say we worry about "our place in the Top Ten Rankings" sometime around Halloween--and THEN only if we have at most 1 loss.

Objectively speaking, the Gators have not shown us enough to be a top ten team. They were 4-0 this time a year ago, and we saw what happened there. I think they are appropriately ranked given what we have seen so far. Beat LSU, and we can talk top ten. Lose a close one to LSU, and we can talk about staying in the 10-15 range. Get hammered, and we can pray to stay in the poll.
