Gators in the 2010 NFL Draft

The first round of the 2010 NFL Draft was last night, with rounds 2-3 being aired Friday night and 4-7 on Saturday. Joe Haden may have been the top Gator picked (#7 by Cleveland), but the night was all about Tim Tebow - are you surprised? In addition to Haden and Tebow, former Gator center Maurkice Pouncey was also picked in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let's take a quick look at the night and what will come in the next 6 rounds.

The Florida Gators had 3 players selected in the first round, behind only the Oklahoma Sooners who had 4 players picked in round one. There's really no surprise where Joe Haden was drafted - the Cleveland Browns loved Joe and had a desperate need at the CB position. Haden was the top ranked CB in the draft so that was an obvious choice. He'll he a tough time playing for a bad team, but this will be a great chance for Haden to lead the change on the Cleveland defense.

Over the past week or two we saw a lock of mock drafts moving Pouncey up the board. Some were saying he could even sneak into the top 10. Now, that wasn't the case but he was picked #18 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Once again, Pouncey was picked by a team in desperate need of a center and he was the top ranked center on the board. Pouncey is going to be a great player in Pittsburgh.

Now on to Tim Tebow... none of those crack head ESPN "experts" thought Tim Tebow would go in the first round. None of the mock drafts had him anywhere. After trading down several times, the Denver Broncos were in prime position to pick Tim with the 25th pick in the Draft. The Tebow camp was extremely excited when the phone rang. Earlier this week, Tim's agent Jimmy Sexton said he knew where Tim was going to be drafted - I'm wondering if the Broncos were the team they thought.

Check out this video interview of Tim immediately after the pick:

The Denver Broncos have terrible QB depth with Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn - there's no reason to think Tim won't compete for the starting job in training camp.

With the second and third round tonight, I'd expect to see guys like Brandon Spikes, Carlos Dunlap and Aaron Hernandez to be picked. I really have no idea what teams will pick them, but it will definitely be exciting to see where they go.

What did you think of the first round last night? Any surprises or criticisms?
